Microwave: is 800 watts enough power?

My microwave just broke (haven't even started kitchen reno yet). I don't know the wattage of the recently departed, but I used it frequently to reheat foods both on plates and in large casseroles as well as to defrost meats. It never worked well (took ten minutes to properly reheat a plate of food). Defrosting ended up cooking the edges of the meat while the center was rock hard. It did not have a turntable, so perhaps that would influence how uniformly it reheated.

People on this forum have mentioned Panasonic and Sharp as well as GE. The minimum wattage seems to be 800w. Is that sufficient? What wattage would work well?
