buying baths online

18 years ago

When I have searched the web for bathtubs the prices seem to be much better than I can find at local retailers. I was wondering if anyone has experience of buying a bathtub online and would advise me on which sites are good and which to avoid. Thanks for your help.

    Will be buying a drop in Kohler tub this week online...Best price i have is from Homecenter.com, though shipping is 125...Faucetdirect.com is a few bucks more, and if you spend 2500, shipping is free...If you are only buying a tub, then Faucetdirect may be a better choice

    If you're looking for Kohler tubs, have you checked your local Home Depot? HD actually had a better price for our Kohler tub than I could find at any online store.

    Home Depot wasn't even close...The Kohler tub retails for 1400+-, Home Depot was within 100, but online it is 400 cheaper

    i bought a maxx living tub from qualitybath and had exceptional service, and saved $800 over a local showroom. i worried about returns if there was a problem, but everything arrived fine & the driver helped me put it in the garage.

    I have done a lot of business with Faucetdirect.com over the last six months or so, as I collect all the fixtures for a kitchen/bathroom/powderroom remodel. I have got to say that I have been extremely pleased with prices and service from them. I am not affiliated with them in any way. I keep meaning to write them and tell them that they have provided excellent service ... wait I think I'll do that now !

    I have bought everything ranging from cast iron Toto tub, toilets, sinks, faucets, rough-in valves, my entire shower system. Everything arrived quickly, was carefully packed, and there were no breakages. I have not had such good luck with other online vendors (Faucet.com - several breakages and delivery problems). I particularly like the fact that they tell you the number of a particular item that they have in stock.

    Within the last 11 days I've ordered almost everything on line for my master bath remodel -

    clawfoot tub, tub drain, tub faucet and 2 sink faucets from VintageTub.com. None of that has come yet, but should be coming soon.

    Two medicine cabinets from MedicineCabinetShop.com - these aren't scheduled to get here till 2/13.

    We've already received these on line purchases:
    Shower faucet from faucetdirect.com;
    Kerdi system and Better Bench from tileprotection.com;
    Premier Underfloor heating system and programmable control from Costco.com;
    pocket door hardware including jamb kit from JohnsonHardware.com
    Panasonic vent fan and a Luton timer switch, ordered by my husband from an line stores, but I'm not sure which one.

    The vanities (actually furniture we're using as vanities) was ordered on line and received late last year, but I forget the web sites name.

    So far everything we've received is in perfect shape. We got either free shipping or really cheap shipping on everything and the only thing we had to pay state sales tax on is the floor heating system from Costco.

    I have been in the bathroom remodeling business for over 25 years. I work with an online retailer who wholesales me products. I find ordering bathtubs online to be easier. At first i was sceptical but i do have to say the selection online is better and cheaper then your going to find anywhere.

    Faucetdirect has an excellent site, easily navigated.Homecenter.com had the better prices by far, i think Faucetdirect instituted a price increase for Kohler and Grohe, which Homecenter is doing 2/1..Also Homecenter does 10% off sales on occassion, the latest one was Monday.Faucetdirect does free shipping on bulky items(tubs/toilets/sinks) only if total order is 2500 or more..Homecenter does not do this, but all in all, Homecenter was better priced on all Kohler and Grohe

    Wow! Thanks everybody for all your responses. I won't be so worried about ordering online now and will certainly check out all the sites mentioned.

    We bought our air tub from DesignerPlumbing. Like you, I was very apprehensive, but the savings was too great to ignore. Instead of ordering online, I called the toll free number to make sure I ordered the correct accessories necessary for our tub.

    When the plumber installed the tub, he couldn't use the "waste lift and turn" I had ordered, so I called customer service to see if I could return it and get my money back. Even though it had been about 60 days I was able to get a full refund (no restocking fee). Their return policy is 30 days, so I was very pleased.

    good tip, ashlander - i forgot to mention that i also called instead of ordering over the web. while i was on the phone, they were able to call the mfr and clarify a question I had, so that was great.

    also, check the mfr site for any promotions going on. the maax site had free chromatherapy with the tub i was planning to buy, but no one mentioned it until i did. my local showroom took almost a week to get back to me about how to get it included :/ but quality bath knew about the promo as soon as i mentioned it. but i did have to mention it.

    I just ordered my toto dorian tub after months of debate and research. I ordered from faucetdirect.com ...they had the lowest price and were hopefully honest about the delivery time. It is considered special order and homeclick was rather rude about when to expect it. I also looked at plumbtile but the reviews scared me...I also didn't find their prices cheaper and they threw a handling charge in at the end. So here is hoping for the best...

    Sounds like faucetdirect is definately the place to go. Thanks for your help everyone!

    Everything has to be shipped from the factory, whether it comes to my house or the local store. I figure the local store has the disadvantage of higher costs for extra handling but they may provide better service if there is a problem with the parts.
    If you have a local place that provides great service (not a big box store like HD or Lowes) then you should really consider what service they may provide. Otherwise, I would recommend going for the best price on-line.
    Some of my relatives in Ohio have a super local place that provides free delivery, set-up, and has a great service department. They always buy from that store. I live on Orlando and everyone here seems to forget you after the sale.
    I have plans to buy everything on-line. I have already bought my tub on-line. The tub was delivered in great shape and the driver put the tub in my garage.
    No tax and free shipping.

    Online sites can also offer great service as well. I know My-bath.com has an excellent service team any time I've had a question on an installation they always have the answer. Ive had some tricky installations in the 30+ units i have purchased from their site.

    Buyer Beware! Many manufacturers will not honor a warranty on a product purchased off of the internet. They will only honor the warranty if it is purchased through one of their registered suppliers. So I highly recommend you check with the manufacturer of your tub for clarification.

    I just purchased my Kohler faucet from faucetdirect. They have a 110% low price guarantee and I sent them a price match so we'll see if they come thru.
    I've been doing lots of purchasing online and have not been disappointed. My last was from homeclick for a hansgrohe trim kit and it came within two days of my order. I was very impressed. I purchased my toto tub from plumbtile and did not have any problem with them. The delivery was very easy. They wheeled it into the garage for me.

  • 18 years ago

    I'm not referring to a price guarantee, I'm talking about if there is ever an issue with the product, many of the name brand manufacturers will not honor the warranty, based on who you purchased from, and they do have ways of finding out whether you are telling the truth or not. So as I said, buyer beware........

  • 18 years ago

    I understand what you are saying about the warranty and it is important to buy from reputable sites. I guess I've been pretty lucky. I purchased a grohe soap dispenser thru an online site a couple of years ago (don't remember which site) and when it failed to work properly, I didn't have any problem with grohe in sending me a replacement unit. As for the low price guarantee with faucetdirect, they responded immediately and honored the 110%. So far so good.
