Hood Liner Question

We are purchasing a 36" capital range and we will have a 48" mantle style wood hood over it. We're not sure which vent system we will be purchasing (recommendations welcome!), but our GC is telling us that we do not need to purchase a liner with it. He claims they never fit and he will just build that part out with the same material as the hood (which will be painted maple wood, and not stainless steel). Is this an acceptable practice or is that not recommended? I would imagine the painted wood would be more difficult to keep clean than stainless, but I'm concerned that it could also be a safety issue. Thanks so much for your thoughts!
