Small bathroom before and after pics

This is my first posting although I've lurked on this site for many months. I thought I would post photos of my bathroom that was just remodeled in case anyone can use it for ideas. It's small but I love the way it turned out!

Beautiful and a great use of space. What are the dimensions? I always love seeing great small bathrooms. My first house ever had a 7 x 7 "master" bath. We remodeled (a long, long time ago)and when we sold the house on the first day on the market the buyers said the bathroom was their deciding factor. Whether you are there long term or selling you did great work.

Thank you. It's about 8 x 10 but I had to house a stack washer and dryer which is hidden behind a mirrored sliding door. We also did my husband's bathroom which measures 4 x 8 and managed to get in a steam shower, sink and wall-mounted toilet. His is really tiny but turned out beautiful.

WOW! Beautiful. Do you have any closeups of the bathtub enclosure. Rather than resort to a framed door I have put a tension shower bar but I like the way you have done yours.

Oh my! It's gorgeous! I love the duravit tub and the drama of the whole space. Great job.

I have a 5 ft x 10 ft bath to think about. Keep those small baths coming. I would love to see your husband's bath also!

mel bc: I posted a photo of the bath screen with the other pics. It was a little tricky because the door has to open over the toilet and the tub is not rectangular so it needed special hinges.

lilathabit: Thank you! It's really hard to take photos of my husband's bathroom because it's so small but I'll try to get some on there

    Luv it! Great job!
Can you provide details...vanity..tile..sink..etc? That's the look that I'm going for, dark vanity, and chocolate brown tiles.

Wow...8x10 is considered a small bathroom???

Well, I'm in NYC and I consider my 50-minute commute to work pretty good, too - it used to be over an hour. (I understand NY'ers have twice the average commute as the rest of the country. And our bathrooms are half the size. ;-))

    Beautiful bathroom, btw!

That's really nice. It makes me laugh when your "small" bathroom still looks like oodles of space compared to mine! I'm in the middle of a 5X5 floor space redo. Bathroom is 5 X 7.5, or so. I hope mine comes out as nicely as yours did.

    It's absolutely stunning!!

Well, it is a small bathroom compared to many in other parts of the country. I'm in the bay area and we have smaller houses (and bathrooms) here than in many parts of the country. My 8 x 10 bathroom is not really 8 x 10 because the washer and dryer take up 3 x 3 of that space. Actually my husband's bathroom is only 4 x 7. I'll try to post some pics of it also.

    dpowlan,
This is a fantastic job! I love the aesthetic. Even though your bath has all dark interiors, it looks very specious....wonder how you achieved this! This is fantastic!

I am in the middle of planning a bath remodel as well; and a modern one at that. (My plan is coming up for discussion soon). I would love to hear about where you got your over-the-toilet storage?! Can you please post me the info? If it is custom made then please let me know the name of the place (I am in bay area as well).

Also looking forward to your husband's bath pix...once again, congrats, an outstanding job.

The vanity cabinets are modular. There are a lot of styles from which to choose. This one is "Linea" (less expensive) for the lowers and "Nu" (pricier) for the uppers. They are made by a Canadian company called Vanico Maronyx. The color is espresso with a maple reveal. Comes with sink and above-medicine cabinet lighting. I chose white marble for the countertops. They are very well designed. The medicine cabinet door slides to open.

Cabinet hardware is from Top Knobs

    Paint is BM Totally Tan

Floor tile is Ann Sachs Veil in Cocoa

Wall tile is called Porruggine in Ruggine

Tub is Duravit Paiova with step and side panel in Macassar

    Toilet is Toto Neorest 500

Exhaust Fan-Panasonic (learned about it on this website)

    Waterfall faucet for tub-Dornbracht MEM

Shower hardware is Hansgrohe Axor Starck and Axor

    Handheld bar is Hansgrohe Citterio

    Toilet paper holder-Jado Glance

Robe Hook and towel bar-Dornbracht MEM

Floor heat-Warmly Yours (Learned about them on this website)

homey bird: I purchased the Vanico Maronyx cabinets through DJ Mehler in SF.

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful comments!

Your bathroom is gorgeous! I am working on a 5X7 bathroom and I am curious about your sliding door for the entry. Do you have a picture of it from the exterior of the bathroom? Also, who makes the door? Was it hard to install?

The sliding door pics are now up on the original link. Sorry, I don't know how to post directly to the message. It was made by The Sliding Door Company in SF. They do custom work. The frame finish is Wenge. I do not recommend them. It took 10 weeks to get and they made it an inch and a half bigger than I requested. My contractor had to open up the door frame to accomodate the larger size door. It was very difficult to install because it has clips that go inside the wall. The outer door is frosted glass, the w/d door is mirrored.

However, for a small room you can't beat a pocket door for saving wall space. Maybe you could find one from another company?

Here is a link to my husband's bathroom which measures 4 x 7. Working with such a tiny space can be done but it's a challenge!

    What a beautiful space. Congratulations!

I just clicked on the husband's bathroom and i nearly choked. I have the same size bathroom in my current house, as well as in the house that we're purchasing this week. I have looked for years for inspiration pictures for that bathroom and I've finally found them. I've never seen a truly tiny bathroom done so well.

Would you mind sharing where you got your bath screen?

Sure. Craig's Kitchens and Baths on Francisco Blvd in San Rafael. They did a great job and I was very happy with them. I got the diamond fusion coating that is definitely worthwhile. It does not show water spots so no need to use a squeegee to clean it. You just wipe it down once a week. I did not get the crystal clear glass. I think it's made by Schicker Shower Doors.

What a tasteful remodeling! Thanks for inspiration! Love your bathroom design and materials.

    Dpowlan,
Can I ask you about your budget for master bath cabinets and smaller bath steam shower? We are planning to remodel all our 2.5 bathrooms (all in contemporary style) and the budget is a big concern.

I bought the steam generator and flush on EBay for about $1000
Teak bench from Teak 4 U about $350
Chroma light system and air switch-Home Click for about $300
About $1200 for shower hardware, saving a lot by using Hudson Reed for thermo controls and handles-all bought online
    Shower pan-Redi-Tile-$650
    Glass doors about $1800

Add that up and it's about $4400 not including tile or labor.

My tile was not expensive but it all adds up. Overall the steam shower cost about $10,000. That's a lot!! BUT, the steam shower was the one request my husband had for his bathroom.

The labor was probably more than the cost of materials. You could save a lot if you are able to DIY.

You have to remember the cost of a regular shower is up there also and I'm not sure how much it would have been without the steam to determine the difference. Much of the cost was electrical and general labor.

The cabinets in my bath included lighting above the medicine cabinet, electrical plugs, sink, and marble countertops. About $6500 total. This does not include the cost of the laundry area cabinets which had to be custom to fit. This also does not include labor, which of course is a lot, but again, you can possibly DIY to save a bundle. The cabinets also come in a less expensive MDF finish which looks pretty good.

Good luck with your bathroom remodels. They are very expensive. Take your starting budget and easily double it. We did both at the same time thinking it would end up faster and less expensive. I was wrong. If I did it again I would do one at a time.

The big unknown is the cost of labor which in the bay area is very high.

    Thanks for the detailed reply!

I know what you are talking about: we completely remodeled 3 bathrooms, kitchen, and other rooms in our previous home. It always takes significantly more time and money...

I hope we will be able to install a steam shower ourselves. That is one thing we did not do before.

Cabinets' price sounds reasonable. I really like that makeup cabinet with the flexible mirror system :o)

Thanks again for providing us with this useful information!

    Dear Dpowlan,
I have to call you dear because it is wonderful that you shared not only your photos, which are phenomenal, but also your costs. Your bathroom definitely has me drooling. LOL What was really helpful was your husband's bath. I have a relative with the same size bathroom and just even knowing where to begin was challenging. Looking at your husband's bath, opened up a flood of ideas. Thanks for the inspiration of both your bathrooms.

Thanks for the door info and adding to your pictures.
Your husband's bath is just as amazing.
    You have really inspired me!

I have a 2nd story room in a 107 year old house that we are turning into a bath. It measures 6x9, HOWEVER it has a very steep roof that essentially makes the back 2 ft of the room unusable. So in reality the room is more like 6x7. We are struggling to find a way to make everything fit and I was wondering about the size of your shower? If possible can you give me exterior and interior measurements? Thanks so much! You have an absolutely lovely bath!

The shower measures 36 x 45 interior. You would have to add a couple of inches for the walls. Could you put the toilet under the sloped roof?

Thanks for the info dpowlan. We had actually planned to put the toilet under the sloped roof and put a small shelf behind the toilet; essentially bumping it out about 6-8 inches, and then put a curbed skylight above it to combat the lack of headroom. Our contractor (at the time) seemed to have no problem with that. We were also going to run our shower all the way back to the roof and put in a shelf and a bench. However when the plumber showed up he told us he was pretty sure that that was not to code. My contractor then called me and said that all the walls in the bathroom had to be at least 5 ft tall per code. Which meant building a wall out from the sloping roof and losing 12 sq ft. Soo our small bath just became much smaller. It is good to hear that the internal dimensions of your lovely shower are 36 x 45. Our "new" dimensions will be approx 42 x 34. I looked at your pics and stopped hyper-ventilating a bit and thought, "Ok that looks roomy and do-able, if we are somewhere close to that size-wise we may be ok" Anyway, thanks for the help. You give all of us small bath people hope!!

Is there any way to repost the photos? I am very interested in seeing your new bathroom. It sounds wonderful!

Lovely bathroom. It looks great. I wish I had the vision like you to design such a sleek and elegant bathroom. I am going to get a waterfall tub filler like your now, for sure :) May i ask where you sourced your lighting from? I love how it matches the look and feel of your bathroom.

The wall-mounted light fixture came with the Vanico Maronyx cabinets. The ceiling mounted fixture was from Lamps Plus. The in-ceiling lighting is just fluorescent tubes recessed behind the plastic sheet. The uplighting for the sculpture and in the cabinet light is just puck lights purchased at Home Depot.
