Do I 'tip' the builder?

I'm a widowed mom of young kids and am currently building our own home. Our builder is a local guy who has his son and a couple of other local guys as his crew. He's a very hands-on builder and an excellent craftsman, he came highly recommended and has been amazing to work with.

I have done this on my own and my family doesn't know much about dealing with a builder. It's been a great learning experience, though it's been challenging at times, since I'm flying solo.

We are close to completion on the house and am starting to wonder if it is customary (or expected) to give the builder a tip or bonus at the end of the completion of the house. I don't know that he'd take anything, but I don't want to offend him (though I don't know that he'd be necessarily offended). Is there a common practice to do this when you're dealing with a builder?

Thanks for the input, I can use all I can get!!
