Wainscoting--panel size

I will have wainscoting in my two front rooms and in the foyer. How do you determine the size of the panels? In the two front rooms, there are two windows on the front side. On the "back side" of the room, each room has a large opening for the pocket door. So, the two sides are totally different. Do I try to keep the panels a similar size? How did you do it? Any pictures?

In size do you mean height, I'm not following?

Sorry. I know I am being confusing. I am talking about width. The various widths of walls are not the same. Do I try to make each panel the same?

Mairin, looks like yours are pretty much the same. How wide are they? About 18 inches?

Ok, now I undertand. So if you have one wall smaller than others, you would make the box smaller. I don't have a photo of my foyer walls that I could show you right now. I'll have DH take one tomorrow and I'll post it.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here - the house is about an hour away, so I'm usually only out there 2-3 times per week.

Our panel moulding is definitely different sizes. To the left of the pocket door they are about 24?" and to the right of the doorway they are about 18?" of course I didn't have my measuring tape on me! It seems as though as long as they are the same on each area of the wall, you would never notice the different sizing. This wasn't even a decision that was made by us, our trim guys just did it this way! HTH

Mairin, it does help, thank you. What is your color in there? It is neat! I think your trim guys did a really nice job.

I have realized that I prefer horizontal panels, but with my layout, I may need to do more square or vertical ones in order to get them to sort of work together. Does anyone have a panel under a window? I have windows that come pretty low, but I think a small panel could go underneath.

Thanks for any input or pictures.

I have picture mouldings under my windows...it looks exactly like the picture posted above by mairin. Are you doing the work yourself? If not, I'd rely on your trim carpenter. They've trimmed out many houses...you shouldn't have to tell them what dimensions you want your picture mouldings, etc to be. They (or at least mine did) will work with your rooms dimensions and lay it out accordingly.

I was OCD about everything involved in my build, but I allowed the trim carpenter some creative license...and it turned out much better than I could have imagined because of that.
