Big Time Score!!!

Ok, this is really off topic for this forum, but I had to share it with you. As you probably know already, I LOVE art and have been collecting it for many years. Well, I've been noticing the ~to my mind~ serious lack of art on the walls at DD's high school. Don't get me wrong, there are a few pieces here and there, but not much. When I asked the principal about it, he told me that their policy is that, if they have enough extra money for art, they should instead be spending it on better educating their students. A great and giving philosophy, but . . . I thought they still need art.

Soooooo, I've taken it on myself to keep an eye out for some larger, good looking, well-matted and framed prints, that I can get for low prices. With New Mexico being the art capitol of the country, this has proven to be pretty darn easy for me. I now have a number of very nice ones that I'll be donating to the school next week. But, I got a real thrill with two of my latest finds. I bought both on the GW auction site, and both are so large that they were for pick-up bidders only, meaning they're too large to ship at a reasonable price. That always cuts down on the bidding . . . and works wonderfully in my favor!

Both of these are by a well-known artist in the Seattle area. I contacted galleries in the area to find out more about them. Both are signed and numbered. They were able to tell me that this first one, that I got for approx. $10, is worth $350 now!!

And this one that I got for $15, is now worth $500!

This is not the kind of art that would fit into my home, but I especially love this second piece. It's very dimensional and was done with a palate knife, I think. Ca you see that the artist embossed the matting for it?

Anyhoo, this isn't a huge thing, but I do think that these pieces and the others, which are more SW Traditional, will really add some beauty to the school and I hope, start some good dialogue between the students.

Well.. all I can say is WOW !! I agree with you about the 2nd piece. For some reason it just really stands out. I think I have to disagree with the principal and his "extra money = better educating" policy. I'm all for our children getting the finest education possible, but I also think that teaching them a love of Art is also part of a good education. Art is sort of like chicken soup for the Soul in my opinion. You really got some nice pieces ! Hope the kids love them :>)

WOW! I'm not a fan of modern art, but I am drawn to the 2nd one, and I'm positive that my BF would *LOVE* it. Wish I could find it here for a price like you paid!

Re school art: at my high school the walls were hand-painted by various (gifted) students over the years. The oldest painting is a huge wall mural of the famous local Revolutionary War battle that was fought here -- painted more than 55 years ago! I never thought about it, but my paintings still remain on the councelor's office walls! I did a lot of custom art and crafts work back then. One of my murals also stands on a local business wall. Wish I had more time for it now. Perhaps you could suggest that idea to the Art Dept. at the school?!

Lynn, this is so sweet of you and you found some nice ones. Let us know what the principal says when you deliver these beauties to the school. It's people like you who make a big difference in our world.

Lynn you are a great Mom!!!! Our school "art", was the same as Party Music's. The school my kidlets graduated from had banners on the walls from various UIL activities in which the students excelled! They also had flags depicting the countries from whom they had entertained exchange students. I made several of the flags, and they are still hanging in the school :^)
Thank you for caring about the students!

Those were great deals. I think the students will appreciate the modern art more than anyone else would. My DS sells a lot of modern pieces (only modern) so I'm always watching for pieces for him. The school should and will be grateful for your generosity I'm sure.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm not doing this for any recognition. In fact, I'm waiting until the kids are out for the summer, which is next Tuesday, before I take them over. I know most of the administration because I do a lot of volunteer work over there and sit on a couple of committees. I just wanted to contribute something that I feel passionate about . . . and that's art. To me, beautiful things on your walls can lift your spirits and brighten your days. I'm thinking that the staff can look over what I bring and choose where they want to hang them.
