crazy tureen

Its 2am here, as usual I'm wide awake so was browsing dish stuff on shopgoodwill.com. I ran across this crazy rabbit veggie tureen. Made me laugh at the thought of doing a table-setting around this critter.

hugs, Karen

That *IS* crazy, Karen! Yikes . . . I collect fruit and vegetable-type serving pieces, but that one is too out there for me! I have to admit, though, it would make for an interesting, albeit silly, centerpiece to design a table around ;^D

    Oh,Karen!!!

    You've done it now!

First you posted a link that caused me to buy Blackcapped Chickadee dishes and now you have me bidding on a soup tureen that is so ugly it is cute!!!!!

I've been so busy I haven't posted in a while, but I check in daily to see what y'all are up to.

Now, you pulled me out with this darling rabbit. I've never bid on shopgoodwill.com before. Another first for this computer dummy.

I'll let you know if I win the ugly duckling.

I'll be rooting for you, Betty . . .but if you do win it, you have to pronise us that you'll show us pics of your tablescape using it, ok?

Karen, that is one freaky rabbit! :)

Betty, LOL. Looking forward to seeing your tablesetting with the rabbit soon! I bet you could come up with a very cute table with him.

I like it! It would be a great centerpiece for a summer party!Betty, any news?

So far I'm the highest bidder. I think it has 1 day and 8 hours more. Any tips on smart bidding to win?

Betty, if someone overbids you, wait till near the close of auction to bid again so the price isn't driven up more. I've been buying off this site for several years and they are GREAT to deal with. And pack things so well. I use my credit card to pay immediately, tho you can mail payment if you prefer. I've never had any problems at all.

You're right, this rabbit is so ugly he's cute. A pitcher with veggies on it and a veggie theme table would be fun to do with him.

How is Alfred? I've been so out-of-touch lately with my back issues and crummy mood that I haven't kept up well with all the posts I'm afraid. Tho have lurked often.
I totally missed getting out my Patriotic stuff before Memorial Day, which I leave up till after the 4th. I'm trying to talk myself into getting it out this week and get off my butt and back into things. Haven't done my stacked plates, or cloche, or mantle in a LONG time.
I've been a blump! (That's a combo of bump on a log. LOL)

Betty, if you can stick around until the last minutes of the auction, here's what I find works best at these auctions:
    1) pull up two of that same bidding page and set them up to see them both at the same time(minimize them)
    2) Set up one page with the top amount that you are willing to bid on that crazy rabbit ;^P: Hit the "Review Bid"; type in your password but DO NOT hit the "Finalize Bid" button yet!
    3) towards the last two minutes , hit the refresh button on the other page every ten seconds or so. This will give you a totally up to the minute view of any other bids coming in. It will also keep you on their official clock, which may be different than your own.
    4) Once you're about 30 seconds from the end of the auction, hit the Finalize button.

If you can't or don't want to wait around for this, I like to wait until the last day to actually bid the most I'll feel comfortable paying for an item, taking into consideration the S&H amount. I find that getting into bidding wars with other people too early in the bidding leaves your final price waving in the breeze for someone to snatch away from you at the last minute for only $1 more.

Getting back to their S&H prices, I've found that their books, small lightweight items and linens usually have S&H amounts that make them not worth bidding on, IMHO. I once found 4 great napkins, but they wanted $11 S&H on them! I asked if they could send them in a manilla envelope, but they refused so I never bid on them. Some of their sites are more willing to work with you than others. It's worth asking before you bid.
On the other hand, items like that soup tureen should be fairly reasonable to ship.
    Good luck!

    Thanks,Karen and Lynn,
I will let you know if the "Wascally Wabbit" comes to live at my house.
If you hadn't shared the bidding secrets I probably would have driven up the price myself!

Karen, Alfred is doing great. He has been working full time since March 23rd. We just moved his 76 year old Aunt in with us last week. She has no children and is beginning to have lots of medical (as well as some memory) problems.
Trying to go through her stuff, bring over what she wants to keep, and figuring out where in the world we are going to put everything is a headache, but we are slowly getting the details worked out.
We would have fun with the "Wabbit"!!

I read last night that it had some chips on it that I overlooked before I started bidding. I've strained these old eyes and can't see any that are truly noticable. I'm hoping I can "work" on him to hide his shortcomings if I win him. I remember that Tam worked magic on a turkey that had chips for a tablesetting around Thanksgiving.

I don't think I have the first fruit/veggie item in my house. I "feel" a new collection in the near future if the "wabbit" moves in! It may take me a while to come up with a "table".
It will make us smile, I'm sure!

Betty, I had noted in the description about some chipping around the hole, and looked closely at the one photo that showed the rabbit with lid off. I think they are not going to be noticeable at all. If so, I think there's stuff at Michaels for touch-up. I often just paint over the 'white' a chip leaves and blend it back in with the color it was.

I sure hope you get this character, he's pretty unique.
And I think one of those things that makes ya smile just looking at it.

Hope you have good luck Betty on your 'Wabbit' !!
He is a 'Conversation Piece' for sure...lol
As far as small chips, I do what Karen does using touch up paint. Then, for a real 'Quick Fix Shine' I use Clear Nail Polish (Nail Hardner) over the paint, once it has dried. I give the clear nail enamel a couple of coats -(wait till each coat is dried) to 'seal up' where I painted. This gives it a sheen, and when you wash it, the paint doesn't fade away.
Once again, Good Luck...and we definitely have to see this Little Guy At YOur Table!!

    Y'all ain't gonna believe this!!!!
I had the bid all ready. All I had to do was hit the "finalize bid" button. I was cooking dinner and had my timer set on what I thought was 5 mins before the auction ended. It went off just as I was putting the cornbread muffin mix in the muffin tin. I quickly threw the muffins in the oven and ran into the bedroom and hit the button. .... And "auction over" came on the screen.

    My heart fell. Darn muffins!!!!
    Oh, well.
Life is full of disappointments. I just figure that I wouldn't have been happy with the chips.

And we all loved the rabbit. :(

Karen, Alfred asked what else was at the shopgoodwill.com site, paused a heartbeat and said, "Never mind. Don't look".
I had to laugh. I guess he saw money flying out of our account:)

    Awwww Betty...sorry you missed out.
Well, that means only One Thing >> There Is Something BETTER out there waiting for you!!
I was laughing over what you said about Alfred - 'Never Mind Don't Look' !! Too Funny
Men...why do we frighten them ! LOL

That same sort of thing has happened to me.

    Jane,
Thanks for the tips on repairs. I'm sure they will come in handy.

I'm not too sad about losing out on my "wabbit". I've been looking for a tureen for a while and will find the perfect one when the time and price are right.

Right now I'm buying a lot of baby stuff for the new grandson that will be here around the end of July. They have the neatest stuff these days. I've picked up a couple of sets of dishes while baby shopping, but haven't had time to gather everything needed for a tablesetting yet. (Hey, can I help it if I just found a Marshall's in the same town we have to go to for the baby's checkup? I bought the baby something there too!) LOL

How exciting Betty... I guess I missed out on the 'Baby Grandson News'..I'm so happy for you, and what an excuse to do some shopping!! I love baby shopping. Too funny on the Marshall's discovery! lol I guess you'll find yourself just 'Having to Peek In' to check if there is anything new. Lucky you.
    Enjoy...and Congratulations.

I have been following the rabbit tureen story with interest. Then, Tuesday, I went in one of our Goodwills and found the cutest bowl or maybe you would call it a compote. It was very much a whimsical piece that would have made a cute table. I just couldn't think of what to put with it.

It featured the cutest plump ceramic pig surrounded by either fruits or vegetables. I laughed and laughed at the site of it. I knew that you ladies would be able to create something great with "Him" at the center of the table.

PD, does your cel phone have a camera??? Take a picture next time. We can all join in the fun, making up various uses for Mr. Porky.

Yes, it does, but I have never used it. BUT, I carry my digital camera everywhere. I am sometimes hesitant to take pictures of things in stores. When we were remodeling a couple of years ago, DH got tired of having to follow me around to see things, so I started taking photos to show him. One day, I was taking a photo of a light in Lowes and I was told that I could take one! I was livid. I had recently bought some appliances there and out GC bought everything from them for the remodel. I couldn't believe the comment. But, I was told it was "company policy".

I will probably be back by GW tomorrow and will take a photo if it is still there.

My 11 year old niece is staying with me for awhile and she just loves thrifting. We were in GW earlier in the week and she told me that she loved hats. We found two that afternoon and two of the cutest dresses---suitable for a tea party. She found a pair of black dressy shoes to wear with them and in one TS we were discussing this and the woman at the cash register went over and picked out a nice velvet purse and gave it to her. When we got home, I found a $10 price tag in the purse!!!!!!!

Audree got her arm out of a cast today after wearing it for 8 weeks following some surgery. She didn't get to have a birthday party a couple of weeks ago since she was in the cast and couldn't do the things she wanted for a party--skating, bowling, swimming, etc.

So, we are going to have a belated tea party. I'll post photos if she doesn't change her mind about the party.

The problem is that I don't have a fancy teapot. I guess we will just have to use the china and I can use a regular kettle to fill the cups and then return it to the stove. LOL

    PD,
How wonderful! My 15 year old DS still loves tea parties!
Of course, I don't go around telling just anyone. (He has his pride, you know) LOL

But, he sure digs into those strawberry shortcakes and sips (or should I say gulps) that tea!!!

    Have fun and post pics.
