Candyman

I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in a different forum. I want to make a 5' candyman for the holidays, to display outside. Howver, not sure what to use to make him stable and to withstand the elements. There will be no actual candy on him, just items made to look like candy. EX: logs wrapped and painted like tootsie rolls, or boards painted like boxes of Milk Duds or Good N Plenty. Only thing I know for certain is that the head will be a terra cotta pot to look like gum drop, with suckers for hair. Any creative ideas?? I keep thinking wood to build it from, but I guess I could use metal from duct work, etc. Just don't want him to look like a tin man. Suggestions please!!!

What a great idea!!! Have you thought about using all terra cotta pots? I'm on the Garden Junk Forum and there's some cute pot people folks have made. Plus wood ones too for holiday decorating. One of the ladies here makes great wood holiday items, so maybe she'll share some photos with you. Hope to see what you make when you're done, the idea is just too cute.

I plan to make some terra cotta people/animals later (I LOVE your Uncle Sam!!), but it won't work for the candyman. Any other suggestions??

These Pot People aren't mine, just photos collected on the Garden Junk Inspiration Album I compiled for my other forum.
Tho anyone is welcome to browse it, tons of stuff.
444 photos in fact, and I add more often.

Daily, other than wood or clay pots, I have no idea. Most the "people" I've seen are done on a 12" wide flat board. If you want the head to be a pot, just round off the wood to fit.
I really want to see what you create, it sounds so cute.

Karen, those pot people are so cute. Not something easy to store away though.

Dailycollector, I don't know if these will help or not, but here are a couple of wooden things I've made. I also have a Santa pic that I will try to find also. For the tall one which is three or so feet tall, I just attached a 2xfour with L brackets to the bottom at the back. You can also make a stand like you see on the back of a picture frame to make them stand up. The scarecrow is much shorter and just has a 2x4 board screwed on the bottom of the feet for a stand. I've also made the same scarecrow to sit on a ledge just by cutting him apart at the "knees" and adding a "shelf" piece for the "lap" between the two pieces. That allows him to sit on a ledge, chair, or table. Hope this all makes sense.

Can't wait to see your finished project, it sounds cute--and put lots of Milk Duds on it--I love Milk Duds! LOL

Karen, what a great link!! I just spent an hour drooling over all the pictures! And thanks for the tip about the paint, Luvs. Didn't even think about that. I also like your idea of standing the item like an easel, but wonder how that would work with it being so tall? That may be my best bet yet. I will definitely let you all know when it's done. And thanks for all the tips! I knew I could count on you!! Daily

Daily, I'm glad you enjoyed the GJ Inspiration Album. I didn't want the photos of all that cool stuff disappearing, and an easy way to share it all. I've also got an Inspiration for our Forum here.

    hugs, Karen

I think I'm going to try to make him out of PVC pipe and stuff for furnaces. That way I can screw the pieces together and fill the legs with sand for stability. I'll try to take pictues as I go along.

I have made serveral "nut cracker soldiers" out of the terra cotta flower pots, in various sizes. I set them out side and haven't had any problems. If the paint fades, I just repaint them, or if the felt I use for the arms, hat and such get yukky, I just replace them.

Flower pots can usually take any kind of weather.
