From the picture, the brown trim in the rug is bordering on a very neutral green. I would go with a true olive. It would warm up your entry and make your front door pop.

It is a blue gray with brown on edges so would you still choose olive green? I'm not getting any inspiration for this hallway. I just want something that works...

Personally I wouldn't choose green. I would choose a blue/gray. My best advice would be to go to a paint store with a picture of the rug in hand. Pick up as many paint swatches as you can that you think match well. Bring them home, compare them to the actual rug. Buy paint samples (usually around $3) and paint swatches either on the walls or on poster board and hang the poster board on the wall. Keep your eye on the color during different times of the day to get an idea if you're happy with that color.

Check out 'barefoot in the grass' by Benjamin Moore as an olive- yes, it would still be my choice as a personal preference. I feel entries should be warm or dramatic. Bobbi P. has good ideas though, looking at the walls at different times of the day and using small swatches before you commit.

Blue will contrast and make your golden hardwood floors stand out more.
Green will complement your golden hardwood floors.
Gray will cool it and make it feel more modern.

Right now, your wall colors are similar to your floors, so it all blends together.

I like the olive green suggestion. It'll make your nice crown stand out more and complement your warm hardwood floors.

The rug is simple design. You could also go with a dramatic wallpaper.

What a great opportunity to really make an impact. I see your dining chairs are upholstered in a rich dark modern fabric and you have wrought iron pickets. I feel you are ready to go contemporary even though it will be a shock for the first couple of weeks. And, a caveat here - it's critical that you use a high quality paint like Benjamin Moore Aura in a Flat finish. Of course you can use a competitive paint but it must must be top of the line and a flat finish. The pigments in dark paints are finicky and to get good coverage you need the best. Also, flat finishes actually hide the drywall imperfections far better than pearl or eggshell!!
I would also recommend you either paint out your smaller scale trim or beef it up. For now paint it out but leave the door trim white. I would also move the lovely console table and centre it on the area rug with an art print or mirror above it.

For a softer you Benjamin Moore Eternity AF-695 - No need to match the blue/grey detail. Rather I feel the paint shade should make your dining area and hallway feel harmonious and balanced. You may find that if you choose a shade darker than what you have in your dining area you will be happy - again using the flat will add exceptional drama and light play. Good Luck.

Hi Joanne: I don't know what "paint it out" means. Also since from the hallway you see into the dining room what color would work in the dining room? The DR has a chair rail so a different color on the bottom of the rail then the top ? Can you suggest some colors? Thanks

Hi, I'm not Joanne but I think what she means is paint the trim the same color as the wall so it doesn't really stand out. Personally, your trim doesn't look undersized to me, so I don't know if I agree with that advice. Honestly, I think your hall is really pretty and has a lot of potential...but I think the size of your furniture and pictures/artwork are more the issue than the paint color. They seem a bit undersized for the space. I think it is the scale of the things in the room...the accessories on the table, etc., which are making it less than exciting. As for paint color, it is really hard to pick a color without trying it out on the wall. Is there a common color in the dining chairs and rug? A couple of common colors? I would look toward those if you really want to change the color, but I would concentrate more on the table, the art and the accessories. They need not be expensive but just a larger scale. Hope this helps.

Paint it out does indeed mean paint it the same colour as the wall. I feel it's a more contemporary detail that avoids trim looking like thin stripes especially when the wall colour and floor colour are considerably different. However, it's a personal preference.
A dining room is generally a place where you can be very dramatic because it's not used for long periods of time - that is - you use it to enjoy a meal for a few hours. I would paint all of the wall one colour - painting the wainscoting the wall colour too. I feel you could paint the dining room a shade or two darker than the hallway. I suggested Benjamin Moore shades in my original post but here are a couple Sherwin Williams SW 7667 Zircon in flat or SW7668 March Wind for your hallway and a very rich shade such as SW 7669 Summit Gray or SW7674 Peppercorn for the dining room. Speak with the paint store experts and have them recommend a primer for the radiator or build a cover out of wood and mesh to disguise it and give you additional servery/display area.
