Beach Tablescape

I am not sure how many of you look at all the blogs participating in Tablescape Thursday and have already seen this tablescape of mine but I thought I'd try and "copy" it here for anyone who missed it. The font is a lot larger so hope it "prints" okay once I submit this. (Please see my comment at the end of this post)

Recently, I was asked to help decorate for a bridal shower in a beach theme and when I brought the items home again, I decided to use some of them in a Beach Tablescape.

I borrowed this large shell from my mom who found it in a Thrift Store recently. I placed it in a large shallow glass bowl with some sand, faux grass and shells.

On the other side of the large shell, I placed a pillar candle in a hurricane shade and wrapped the bottom with netting that was actually a "bag" that was on the starfish I bought.

I used a bamboo runner I had down the center of the table. It coordinated perfectly as the blue string running through it was the same colour as the tablecloth.

On each side of the centerpiece, I placed a black lantern which are usually outside on our deck.

I put two of my glass cylinder vases with inserts beside the black lantern and filled the inserts with blue beads and a floating candle. In the bottom part, I layered sand and shells. A trio of starfish/urchin candle holders by Partylite flanked the vases on one side.

Each place setting consisted of a bamboo placemat, silver charger, coral-coloured dinner plate, blue flower-shaped salad plate and a clear shell-shaped appetizer plate. A placecard attached to shell, individual salt & peppers, candle holder, stemware and scattered shells adorn each place setting.

A closer look at the blue salad plate.

Originally, I had folded the napkins in a "fan" manner to simulate a shell look and tucked the fork inside. I wasn't happy with it though and went back to putting the napkins under the shell plates.

These two shells (next pic too) that I got at HomeSense were put on tables in the corners flanking my china cabinet.

Now the table is set, I just have to convince my husband to cook us up some crab and prawns, which he always makes to perfection, call up some friends and a dinner party will ensue!

Having a blog is fun for participating in Tablescape Thursdays but I am finding it difficult to find the time to

post more than that. One thing that is so true, and Kathleen said it so well in a comment to me, "we must NEVER forget our "roots" here on Garden Web-Holidays! I certainly won't! I enjoy our little group here and feel it is a lot more "personal" than blogland. I am still so thankful that I came across this forum and appreciate all of your comments and encouragement over the past year and a half. Let's carry on forever sharing our love of dishes!

    DD,
Thanks for posting your tablescape thursday post over here too. I used to check out the TT posts sometimes but get overwhelmed with so many links there and so little time that I have stopped checking them out at all! Your beach tablescape looks perfect - I would never have thought of using the copper colored dishes with the blue tablecloth but it works beautifully.

And your candleholders are so versatile!! I have seen them for so many different themes and you have them set up so well each time! I really like your little shell candleholders and the shell glass plates. That big shell in the centerpiece is gorgeous and using the bag as net was a clever idea.

One of the small towns we lived in when I was maybe 5 was right on the beach - your tablescape takes me back to those times. The roofs were mostly thatch like the runners you have and the beach littered with huge shells. I have fond memories of walking on the beach everyday and watching my mom buy something or the other made out of shells. She was (still is!) a sucker for pretty handmade things. Now, you have got me thinking I need to do a beach tablescape. :)

Oh, DD, your sweet comment at the bottom brought tears to my eyes! This little forum sure did evolve into a wonderful place to chat and share, didn't it? It was pretty slow until we started sharing our love of dishes in between the holidays, that really gave us something to "create" and share whether it was holiday time or not. I know I look forward to signing on nearly every morning and reading every post. Everyone here is always so supportive and helpful to each other. We've sure seen some wonderful table decorating, learned allot from each other, and had allot of laughs together too.

I love visiting the blogs and seeing what everyone is doing--but there are just sooooo many of them that it is hard to keep up with them all. I'll admit that I have been a little concerned that we might lose some of our posters who are now busy keeping their blogs going---Tam, Mary Ruth, Jenn, Judith, etc. seldom find time to visit us here anymore and I miss them. But change is an inevitable part of life. At least, we can always click over to their blogs to see what they're creating. At least you and Kathleen can always pop in here and remind us to come over to your blog to see something you've created even if you don't have time to post it here, okay?

Now on to your gorgeous tablescape. Love your starfish and shell candle holders, and the way you used the shell and candle in your centerpiece too. In my humble opinion, the fake grass was just the perfect added touch. I liked that you tried the napkin both ways--I always struggle with what to do with the napkin--but agree that the way you used it under the shell plate was perfect. ;o) Thanks so much for sharing this here with us, DD, you are a real sweetheart. I hope Karen comes by and "captures" this one for the tablescape album. Hint hint

I thank you too for posting. I can't "jump" from blog to blog...not enough time, so I am thankful to get to see yours here!!
I went to school just inland from Daytona Beach Florida, so this reminds me of lots of great meals...fresh caught!
    Thanks again for posting,

dining delight I think you should win a big prize for this! I love your seaside tablescape. Thank you for the inspiration! I am having so much fun lurking on this forum!

Yep, Luvs, I'm here and snagged one of the photos for our tablesetting album. I am WAY behind in adding pictures, but I promise I'll get them in the albums soon. They are safely stored in my PFC right now.

DD, great table. And those two huge shells are really fantastic.

Wonderful post about our litle gang here. I always worry we'll lose some of you to blogland. I sure miss Judith and some of the others.....and where the heck is JIM? I don't think he blogs! Thank you to all who stay here and make this such a great place to be.

    hugs, Karen

I love this so much! It looks so peaceful and serene. I can almost hear the waves crashing. I plan to do a shell theme for my sister's birthday party....lots of ideas here! Love it, love it, love it!

Sameboat, I love your forum name! Please don't just lurk anymore--just jump right on here with your comments and ideas. If you've been "lurking" here for awhile, you know that we love pictures, but if you are not comfortable with that, then just come visit with us.

Karen, so glad you got a picture for the album. I know keeping up with the albums is almost a full time job (unpaid) but we sure appreciate your efforts when we click over there and see all that eye candy in one place! ;o)

I haven't dug out any of my shells and things yet this summer. Oh, and the little beach girl I painted last year, I'd almost forgotten about her. Guess I need to go dig around in my shed a bit soon.

DD, I don't know if I've told you or not, but I've enjoyed all your pretty tablescapes, and plan to stop by your blog often as well. ;o)

Ahoy there! Love, love, love what you've done. The big shells are wonderful. Wish I had some. And the shell votive holders are great. Like the fact that there are a variety of different shapes.
The place mats are very beachy. Think I'll look for some like it.
Now, I have to say, I think I prefer the napkin with the fork look to the napkin under the plate look. Really like how it's threaded through the napkin ring.
Also like the "netting" around the main candle holder. Wouldn't have thought of that, but I think that little touch adds a lot.
The whole thing makes me hungry, as I can't get enough of seafood.

Mo, thank you for your many compliments & comments! I can totally relate to the time it takes to look at all the links for TT. I used to find it time consuming to just look at them but now I feel I have to comment on them, it is overwhelming! I'm not sure if I am cut out for blogland when I still have to go to work 30 hours/week.

I agree that those glass vase/candleholders are so versatile. I am so glad I got the set of three and then found two more on a clearance table as one in the trio was broken. There are so many things you can do with them especially as the inserts have flat bottoms and you can use them separately.

I am happy that my tablescape brought back fond memories for you. It sounds like it was a wonderful place to live!

Luvs, you are so sweet and one of the reasons, I would never leave this forum! It is such a caring "family" here and like you said, we've had a lot of fun sharing our passion for tablescapes as well as some personal aspects of our lives. I just KNOW we would be friends in "real life"! Thanks for your compliments on my 'scape, I agree the faux grass "made" it and I got that idea from a tablescape book my son gave me for my birthday.

Jay, I was undecided as to whether to post my blog entry here as I thought it might seem like I was just trying to "show it off" twice but you have made me feel like I did the right thing. Living near Daytona Beach must have been terrific! (never been there but have seen pics!)

Sameboat, thank you! I know I lurked here for a year before "coming out" and it was great but it is even more fun to join in. We love to hear from new people so feel free to comment or post pics anytime!

Karen, thanks for saving a pic for the album. You just work on that when you are feeling better. We all understand and like Luvs, said you aren't getting "top dollar" to do that work though we SO appreciate it! I haven't seen Jim in blogland either so wonder what he is up to. Yes, it is sad that Judith has left us. We were having such fun doing that "online course" she was teaching us. Whenever I look at that Nell Hill's book, I think of her.

Donna, thanks! I'm always glad when a tablescape of mine can inspire or give ideas to others. Hope your sister's bday is a good one!

Thank you, OA! Those placemats were a gift from my DD for Mother's Day but I know she got them at Walmart. At first, I was thinking an Asian setting with them but I like how they went with the beach theme too. The reason I didn't go with the fan-folded napkins was that they wouldn't lay right on the placemat but I kind of liked the idea and may use it again sometime. Wish you all could come over sit at the table while DH prepares us some seafood!

It is beautiful, BB, as I said on your blog..
And I always say I started on the Holidays forum, I wouldn't know how to post a pic if they didn't teach me...and encourage me in my addiction!:)
Summer is busy here, lots of visitors and family, so I am absent more than other seasons...
    But I know my roots!

DD, you do such a wonderful job editing your photos. This table is quite wonderful. I loved everything, including the rejected napkin fold, it did look like a sea shell. Thanks for sharing. - Gail

    DD,

I sooo love your beach table! I just got my beach table set up late yesterday afternoon, with a LOT of "help" from my 5 year old DGS!! He had so much fun. Watching him place and then adjust everything just made my heart smile. Wouldn't take a million dollars for yesterday. I will try to get some pics today and post them.
They won't be as beautiful or as professional looking as yours. You have such talent. I keep hoping some of it will rub off on me! :~))

Betty, thanks! Glad you are still encouraging your little DGS to tablescape! I can imagine how special the time you spend with him is. Would LOVE to see what kind of beach tablescape you have come up with!

Sorry Gail, I must have missed your comment. Thanks so much! I do have a lot of fun editing the pics I take (they NEED it!) with the options they give you on Flickr. That "rejected" napkin fold was supposed to look like a shell but I didn't see it!

    Your table is wonderful!
I don't come here often, but love to see what all
of you are doing.I have not seen the vases with inserts before and I really like what you did with them.
LIke the scallop-shell top plates too!
