Roofing Question - Drip Edge

I am having a small second floor addition built onto the back of my house. The roof was put up today and it's been shingled. I hope I am correctly explaining what he said, but the contractor said something to the effect of it does not need a drip edge because when the gutter is installed he will bend the metal gutter up underneath the shingles which will act as a drip edge. Is this anacceptable way to do it? If it is acceptable to fashion a drip edge in this matter, could someone explain to me exactly how it should be done so I know whether he's doing it right? Thank you for any information you can give me.

felt over drip edge imo not the same issue as gutters.
sounds like he is trying to save a little in material costs and more in time/labor.

The purpose of a drip edge is to force water to drop straight down into the gutter instead of running back and up under the shingles. It should be placed at the eave (horizontal roof edge) and the rake (sloped roof edge).

I've seen gutters with an apron that goes under the shingles but for it to be effective it must extend onto the roof about 6 inches and the self-adhering flashing (Ice & Water Shield) must be installed over it and then the shingles should be installed.

Now that the roofing has been installed there aren't a lot of options available to you. Ask him how far the gutter extends under the shingles.

The roof should have not only have a drip edge, it should be a vented drip edge.
The items shown in the link below can be retrofitted.

There is no reason to assume that the OP has not taken care of attic/roof ventilation in some other way.
