Harley Davidson Tablescape

It is black & orange but not Halloween....DH challenged me to do a table setting and dinner (for 5 couples including us) incorporating something we all enjoy doing which is riding our Harley Davidson motorcycles. It was so FUN to do because DH got involved and while I came up with the place settings/dishes, he did the centerpiece and accessories on the table. You will see, it was a challenge to make them look like you wanted to eat there!

Since the Harley Davidson colours are black, orange and white, I thought it was a good time of year to do it...plus we and the guests we invited will all soon be putting our motorcycles away for winter.

DH came up with the idea for two cylinders (do you know your bike parts? lol!) as a centerpiece which were put around a glass vase with a HD print-out inside and a HD bandana tied around. The pipes (heat shields) became a "runner" down the length of the table. Used the skulls for a "bad biker" look as well as this Halloween time of year.

I was thrilled to find these burnt orange coloured plates at a local store (were pricey but I NEEDED them!) which matched the HD colours perfectly. I added a cardboard drink coaster on top of each salad plate and a black charger to complete the look. Two mirrors (one seen) off bike were displayed on the opposite side of the cylinders.

I had two square black plates (could only get 8 of the orange) so used them along with the square white salad plates. I made a HD print-out for on top of the plates (only had 8 coasters too!) which was removed before the salad was served. For the soup course, I used my pumpkin bowls as they went with the orange part of it and the time of year, but forgot to take a pic of them.

Each guest received a take home gift which was a box of chocolates. I bought some small boxes of choc wrapped in orange paper for Halloween so added the HD print-out to go with the theme. The place setting cards were made with print-outs as well and put in photo frames.

A chrome air filter cover makes a shiny candle holder! A HD patch off an old leather jacket makes a statement.

A shock absorber, HD drink glasses used as candle holders and a tail light add to the look.

Hard to read but I prepared a six course meal on top of all the table decorating!

Hope you enjoyed a very DIFFERENT themed tablescape!! I am exhausted from all the planning, decorating and cooking but it was such a fun party we are thinking of making it an annual event!

DD that was so much fun to see all your pics. What a great job both you and your hubby did on it. Love the bike parts for the centerpiece, and the plates you found were so perfect. You made great use of all the print outs too--very creative, I'm very impressed and so glad everyone had a great time. Luvs

Great job and give your DH a pat on the back as well.

I LOVE your Harley table setting!!!! My husband and I are Harley riders, too. I will have to steal your ideas and perhaps recreate my own version for my hubby some day soon. Thanks for sharing!!!

I love it - excellent right down to the last detail (and tons of work, I'm sure).

But tell me, how did you serve dinner? I'm curious because I've often thought of hosting a sit-down dinner where courses are served up in the kitchen, but wasn't sure about the logistics of how my guests would feel if I were getting up from the table to dish up courses all the time. Did you do it all yourself, or did you hire help?

That centerpiece is just amazing, and your dishes were perfect...

Thank you all very much for your nice comments!

Luvs, I was going with 3 glass vases for centerpiece (with the HD computer print-outs inside) until DH came up with the "parts" idea...and it all took off from there. I ended up using the HD glass vases over on the coffee table so they added some themed decor in another area.

Karen, how neat to hear your older son has Harleys as well. (He will prob be able to name the parts better than me!) We actually just purchased another Harley ourselves and now have two. That was another reason for the party, a celebration of sorts, though I'm not sure I should be celebrating the fact that my dish budget has been drastically reduced on account of it!! LOL!!

Sandi, glad the thought and originality came through. It was actually so much fun to do when we thought "outside the box" using the parts.

Judith, you are so right! It was the first time, the GUYS at one of our dinner parties were so "into" the table setting. They were really taking it all in!

Letmag, how great you ride too! What kind of bike(s) do you have? We have a '95 Dyna Wide Glide and just purchased a '09 Road King Classic. You SHOULD do a Harley table for your DH, he would love it!

Jamie, we host quite a few dinner parties and I SO WISH I could hire a maid to serve but it is DH and I getting up to bring in each course. As you can tell, there is NO room on the table for food so once it is passed around, we put it on a side table (set up for the occasion as there is no room for a permanent one). For the appetizers, soups & salads, we bring those in already dished up. It DOES involve quite a bit of getting up and down from the table, but I don't rush the courses and everyone enjoys their wine in between so hopefully, it isn't too disruptive to my guests - they don't seem to mind as long as they get fed! LOL!

This is the greatest! I'm getting Easy Rider flash backs. Athough, I see you didn't have omelettes without potatoes on the dinner menu.
It's all too fantastic. How wonderful it must be to be a guest at your house.

That's great! And I have to say I don't think I have ever seen a Harley theme! Wonderful job! Very imaginative, for sure!
    The menu looks wonderful too!
Did you all wear biker outfits??? Too funny!

dd...BRAVO..that's the MOST creative table yet!! I love all the thoughtful and original touches that you and DH put into every detail. I'm not surprised that the guys at the table were taking it all in..as there was so much to see. To think, you did all that prep for your table, and did a 6 course meal as well. YOU are amazing...With out even being there, I had such a good time just looking at your table...TFS

And additional thanks to you ladies for your thoughts and compliments on the Harley table!

OA, you are good!!! Easy Riders and the omelette without potatoes line!! LOL!! I did contemplate having some kind of "biker food" although not sure just what that would have been. NEVER thought of omelettes without pototoes though! LOL!

Letmag, what kind of bike did you have before? I think a Harley bday party for DH is a great idea!

Mo, those pipes were a bit of a pain as DH INSISTED they be put together in a similar manner that would be found on a bike. But the end result was worth it and he was happy.

Kathleen, before we did the table, I Googled "Harley Davidson tablescapes" but couldn't find anything (now this one comes up - I feel "famous") so I think you are right in it being a new kind of theme for a table. As for outfits, I DID tell everyone, they had to wear their BEST Harley T-shirt! LOL!!

dd50, I have been tired for days after...only now starting to put things away although DH says he wants to enjoy the table a bit longer, so I actually put the plates, etc back on after they were washed.

Jane, glad you enjoyed the different views of the table. I don't really feel "amazing" doing it all as I have a lot of help from DH with everything from prepping to clean-up, he is totally supportive in all areas of entertaining (buying more dishes, maybe not so much!) which makes it fun and easier to do.

    Hi DD!

When I read "Harly Davidson", I did not thought that it could be related to Halloween... but it's a great alternative to pumpkins, spiders, etc.

By the way, thanks for the pic of your menu: more ideas for the Friday party as I still don't know what to cook!

A friend of mine will bring a giant pumpkin and we'll make soup and probably a pumpkin pie with it; another will bring some vegetable pies, and another one will bring beverage. However, between the soup and the dessert, I have to find something.

That is when your menu comes in, haha.

Let's go for shrimp cocktail as appetizers!

Chicken as main dish and... while I have no idea about what are potatoes romanoff, I'll cook some sweet potatoes - my friends never eat such potatoes, hehehe.

    Wow, just Wow!!!

I'll be forwarding these pics to my parents who are avid Harley riders. The orange and black just goes so well with Halloween too, it's perfect!

    Vansen Hines pipes?

Prosperity, I agree the Harley colours do tie into Halloween so well! I hope you are finalizing your menu plans for your party on Friday, time is running out and you don't want to have to use a "COOK" as your costume that night! LOL!! Hope you have lots of fun and can share some pics with us!

Antique Christmas, thanks! I hope your parents can relate to the tablesetting. No, the pipes are some "Hooker" ones that never fit properly on our old bike so are like new but DH is looking at some "Vance & Hines" ones for the bike we just bought.

My husband has a Change of Command coming up next year, and I think I will have the H D Theme for his farewell party. He rides a 2007 v-rod.

Socalgirl, glad I could be of inspiration to you for your DH's Change of Command farewell party. Hope it turns out as fun for you as it did for us. I really like seeing how this table setting has brought out fellow "bikers" and hearing about what kind of bikes they ride. Thanks for your comments!

I re-read my first post and I think it sounded a little selfish. Thanks for the inspiration. I bought skulls and orange and black candles today at the sales. Looking forward to seeing the surprise on his face when he enters the room.

DD, I sent the photos of your table to my oldest son after telling him about it when he was over here yesterday. He said it sounded really cool, but I think actually seeing the pix will really astound him! Wish I could "borrow you and your table" for his birthday in two weeks. LOL. He'll be 45, jeez that makes me feel ancient!! Oh, his main Harley is the 2003 100th Anniversary one, I don't know what its called. Its silver and black, and I think its beautiful. The other Harley he's decided to sell, its some customized one that a bit much for my tastes. LOL. I don't know much about them obviously.

    hugs, Karen

Socalgirl, I didn't get any "selfishness" in your first comment at all. You are smart to pick up the orange/black candles and skulls at this time of year. I don't know about you but our closest Harley dealer is 2 1/2 hours away so for the actual HD items, We used what we had on hand and couldn't just run out and buy things. Plus, as most of us riders know HD actually stand for "Hundreds of Dollars" for anything related! LOL!

Karen, I appreciate you sharing your oldest DS's thoughts on our table and sending him the pics. We actually still have the HD table all set up ready to go, if you want to have a surprise bday party for him here - wouldn't he love to come to Canada for it? LOL! I'd be happy to do it all again for someone who could relate to it. I'm sure we'd get along well as DH and I are only one year older than him. Sorry, I can't tell what kind of Harley he has by your description as in 2003, all the bikes were 100th anniversary ones...I'm sure your DS will be thrilled when you tell him one of your "dish friends" wants to know! LOL!

P.S. Don't feel "ancient" because age is irrelevant when it comes to enjoyment of our dishes/tablescapes/decorating, in fact, I think it KEEPS US YOUNG! How's that for "enabling"? LOL!
