my 'dish collection'

In my living-dining room, I have a small corner curio. It has 4 glass shelves, with mirror backing, and two small drawers. In it is my collection of dish stuff. Since I haven't been able to show you dishes ON a table, I can at least show you some of mine in the curio. Most are greyhound or rabbit themed of course, since that is mainly what I collect (along with horses). (Oh I also stick little statues among the dish stuff.)

The black n white silhouette dishes are very old and I don't have info on them other than they came from another collector in the 80s. Its two sandwich-sized plates, along with 2 cups and saucers. She said it was part of tea-set. The brown mug with hound handle is from the 80's, and just happens to match the Rosemeade greyhound S&P shakers really well. The black n white pitcher with the hunt scene was from the 70's. The colorful pitcher on the left is a Staffordshire piece I believe, with a fox hunt scene. The blue and white china tea cup, sugar n creamer are not old. I can't remember the pattern name but I found them at Replacements (online). They have hounds chasing deer. I couldn't afford the whole dinner set but love this china pattern! Also it comes in tan and white.

{{gwi:1438967}}

The Rabbit, and the matching mug, are OLD Majolica type pieces. Haldon I think. The rabbit is actually a jam or honey jar and has spoon opening beneath his chin. I now have a good collection of the Majolica_Bordallo Pinheiro rabbit dishes going. Bread or snack tray in back, a sandwich plate, a teapot, and a small water pitcher.

A creamer and sugar bowl, two cups and saucers, on a large platter. I don't have a dinner plate yet, or the pedestal cake stand. Really want those. I've lucked out and found these Bordallo pieces at reasonable prices at Marshall's and Rosses the past two years. They come in 5 colors, but the green is my favorite. I also like the lavender tho. Pink, blue, and yellow are the other colors. The Bordallo has lots of designs. Frogs, roosters, dragonflies, pineapples, etc. They are easy to find on eBay but shipping is horrible as they are super heavy pieces!

{{gwi:1405800}}

The vintage rabbit creamer and sugar bowl were a birthday gift from a friend. They are so neat I think.

In the background you can just make out the elegant little tea set that belonged to my late grandmother. Its around 60-70 yrs old now I think. There are 8 little cups and saucers, teapot, sugar and creamer. The 4 cobalt goblets have greyhound heads etched on them, a gift from a friend. There is tiny cobalt rabbit salt cellar in front of them.

{{gwi:1438968}}

And lastly, my "tapestry" dishes. The tray on the right is melamine and features the scene from Hunt of the Unicorn. It has rabbits, white greyhounds, birds, etc. There are two matching (glass)glasses. Far back is an antique hound-handled pitcher. In front of it two mugs, from the 1930's I believe. One has a greyhound head, the other a running rabbit. The little white jam jar has a hunt scene and is from 1911 I think it says.

The two tapestry mugs n saucers I found on eBay at different times, done in Staffordshire style. You can barely see the silver teapot, but it has a rabbit finial on top. There is a matching creamer and sugar bowl. They are extremely heavy silver, with rabbit and leaf etchings all around the sides. Another eBay BARGAIN find.

Up front is a tiny handpainted porcelain box from Eng. The greyhound head looked just like one of my late dogs.

{{gwi:1438969}}

NOW....be nice... as I KNOW I am going to hear about ALLLLLL the table-setting possibilities here. LOL.

And I know most of you could make some fabulous ones with this stuff!! I sure wish I wasn't a total dunce and could do so to show you. But I really am clueless how to put stuff together on a table. sighing deeply.

hugs, hopeless ol' Karen

Ooops, just realized I cropped the pretty "Hunt" tea pot out of the first photo. Here it is. I found it antiquing a few years ago.

Karen, all your dishes are lovely. It is great to have special pieces that mean something to you on display. I like them so much I can't pick out a favorite.

    I do have two questions--

Was the little rabbit in the second pic given to you by the little girl? I can imagine how good she feels to know it is in a special place of honor.

And, I know my memory is crumbling fast, but I thought long ago you had some Pfaltzgraff pieces "Vienna _____" with butterflies? They are such pretty dishes.

Thanks for sharing your pretties with us.

Wow, Karen, what beautiful pieces you have! I really love your Hunt teapot. The scene is just lovely. Love the Tapestry pieces, too. All your green Bordallo pieces work so well with your Bunny pieces for Spring and Easter! I'm drooling over all your bunnies . . . so pretty and dainty, especially your vintage sugar and creamer. It's wonderful that you surround yourself with the things ~ and furkids~ you love. Thanks for showing them to us.

I won't even mention the tablescape possibilities but rather am just so happy you have shared some of your dish collections with us, Karen. And if they can't be on a table, I think you chose a wonderful way to show them to us. I like how your dishes have special meaning to you and you remember the people who gave them to you. My fav is the Bordallo rabbit plates and I love the green ones too! I hope you will continue to show us pics of the dishes you have/buy/receive.

Karen...I love, love, love, your dishes. ALL of them.
The patten on the sillouette dishes looks familiar. I like the vintage look to them. Love that Hunt pitcher..nice find.
It's so different and looks old too.
I'm 'eyeing' your Bordallo Bunny dishes. I really like those. I agree with Lynn, your Bunny pieces go nicely with them. I'm also 'eyeing' that lovely Silver Bunny Teapot
It looks old and very different. The set must be gorgeous together. You must show them off, together...on a tray..with some cups and saucers.. maybe a napkin or two..and some cookies...Then, Take Lots of Pictures...
No Pressure.. I'm not asking too much...Right? lol

Your melamine tray goes nicely with your Tapestry pieces.
Very different too, and I love their color.

Karen, you have such a nice collection. I'm so happy you got to share them with us, and I enjoyed reading 'their stories' and how you got them.

I can see you have a Great Eye, and are quite a 'Hunter', of fabulous things. lol

What a wonderful collection of different things, the green things are my favorite and all the bunnies. I used to collect bunnies, now only at Easter. You have the makings of some great tablescapes, but I can side with you about not getting around to it. Anyway I'm sure they look good in your cabinet.

Loved hearing the stories about each of the items, Karen. I know you have had allot of fun searching for items to add to your collections. You have sure found some special and unique pieces. How fun to have special things that just make our hearts beat a little faster and give us such enjoyment. And I'm really glad that you have them on display so you and others can enjoy seeing them. ;o)

Lee mentioned that you also have "other" dishes too. I'm remembering some really great rooster plates that you got one year for Christmas--bet our newer members would love seeing those again. It's sure fun to see pics of pretty things--what other "dishes" do you have in your stash?????? We wanna see more! ;o)

Oh man! You've got great dishes. I am loving the green ones. And you've got a lot of them. I didn't know Marshall's carried those. I'll have to keep my eye open. I saw ones like them in Sur La Table last spring and wanted to get them, but I didn't because they were so expensive.

I was also taken with your silhouette dishes. Like the old-fashioned look of them.

The tapestry dishes are unique. And how neat that they tie into your love of doggies.

Karen, I think you've been holding out on us. I've seen pictures of all your figurines, but didn't know you had such a nice collection of dishes. It's hard for me to keep my mouth shut about table settings, but I've put a gag in my mouth.

Oh my gosh, Karen, your dishes are wonderful. I don't see how you could miss coming up with a beautiful table when you have all these pretty things. That being said, I'm tablescape shy too, so I know how you feel.

I love your rabbit things and those green dishes are wonderful. - Gail

Karen, you have some very nice things and I love that many have history or are special interests of yours. Even if you don't want to hear about tablescapes, I know you do vignettes and every one of the things you've shown us are perfect for that. You've probably used them and I've missed the pics. TFS - nice to see others treasures.

Thank you SO much, Everyone. LG, I do want to hear about tablescapes, LOL. Just wish I could stop disappointing everyone with my lack of ability. I see ideas others have, and sometimes I think "gee, that looks easy". But then I go to try and put something together on a table and and it just looks like stuff sat on a table. All the important little touches aren't there. Maybe I should stop thinking table SETTINGS and just play with table VIGNETTES. (remember all those wonderful little ones Judith use to do?)

OA, stop mumbling and take off that gag. LOL. I don't want to impede your ideas and thoughts!! Neither Marshalls nor Ross get much in of the Bordallo at a time.
I have found one maybe two things. Then months later, another. Home Goods probably has more at once, or they did the one time I got to go there. The cake plate I want is around $30 if I remember correctly, but have only seen them on eBay so far.

Lee, the little bunny figurine my adopted niece gave me is in a place of honor, but not in that cabinet. (I have lots of bunnies all over the place) And no, it wasn't me who had the Pfaltzgraff or butterflie pieces.

I'm not sure if y'all can tell, but the silhouette dishes are two ladies and a greyhound. That is why I bought them.

Sly Slinkey Said "You must show them off, together...on a tray..with some cups and saucers.. maybe a napkin or two..and some cookies...Then, Take Lots of Pictures...
No Pressure.. I'm not asking too much...Right? lol"
    And Sly Slinkey IS right!!!
So here's where my brain refuses to function. Pretty little silver tea pot with sugar and creamer, on a tray with napkin and cookies. But what cups 'n saucers would go with this little set? Can I do a "setting" without them? This is where I need imagination and have none!
No one but me bid on that silver set and I got it for under $10! I was shocked. The rabbits on it are wonderfully detailed. Reminds me of some of the Arthur Court pieces in fact. This is such a small set, I wondered if it was made for a child long ago? I will take a photo of the set soon so you can see it better.

I'm wondering if the 'silver' set isn't actually pewter?
Its not sterling, doesn't tarnish, and boy is it ever heavy! I'll get it out in daylight tomorrow and see if I can find any markings on it.

and Luvs, I'll post a pix also of the stoneware Rooster dishes my daughter gave me two Christmas's ago. Cool you remembered that set.

I remembered your rooster plates because they were so pretty, Karen. Loved the colors in them--well actually, I drooled over them! LOL

With that pretty tea set, I would think you could use any cups/saucers you wanted since the tea set is "neutral" in color. I loved the way Jane so casually suggested that too--and was waiting to see if you would pick up on it! ;o)

I think you are on the right track--just do "vignettes" using your pretty things. Great idea!

And don't be silly, you sure are NOT disappointing any of us! You share lots of your decorating and collections with us, and you find and share all those wonderful inspiration pictures for us! We love you just the way you are and are so glad you are on here with us! ;o)

    Hugs,

Don't know why... maybe because it's SPLENDID, my eyes were caught by your black/white silhouette dishes as soon as I opened the page!

This is really a wonderful set! I would just say that I regret you don't have the entire one, this would have been so great!

Anyway, I like the green dishes also and... the red or terracotta rabbit one, it's lovely and so Mexican (Arizona and Mexico aren't that far, uh?

Congratulations on your great collection! I'm green with envy!

Thanks, Dom. Luvs, here's the Royal Rooster ironstone set.
I used it only a couple of times. My DH didn't like it that well (the ironstone I mean, not the design.) I tried selling it on Craigslist with a bunch of rooster accessories and no takers. Dang.

    'Sly Slinkey' here...!!

I agree with Luvs.. just do a little Vignette and I agree too, that ANY cups would go. How about just a simple cup and saucer.... Just 1 ..even if it's White! It will go. Use a lace napkin or hankie (not DH's). That would work...and add some books (pretend you're reading)!
    Are your 'Wheels' turning yet??
    Trust Me....No pressure!

I would check that set out, to see if it might be pewter, since you said it doesn't tarnish. Wow, I can't believe the price. It is so unique.

Too bad on your Rooster Dinnerware, it's such a nice pattern.
Sometimes I can't figure DH's out, with what they like, and don't like, to eat on. My DH 'prefers' a Plain Solid Color Dish!! No patterns...too bad though, cause NOW, I like to Rotate All my dishes >>> patterns included !! lol

LOL, Kathleen, yep my accidental discovery of this Forum and seeing Judith's stacked plates brought me to buy my own... and rest is history. As for being richer? NAH. Becoming part of this 'family' has enriched me far beyond the wallet. I don't know what I'd do without this place and all of you. You've been a blessing in my Life more than any of you could possibly know.

Sly Slinkey, I DO read. LOL, no pretending. I also drink tea. (no coffee tho). Keep YOUR wheels turning and I might actually succeed at putting something together now.

Karen, Don't part with your rooster plates--you can always display them on your countertop when the holidays are over--they are really pretty. My neighbor got a new set last year for Christmas and has hers on one of those three tiered metal stands on her kitchen counter. Her's are a red background with the roosters on them and she has several ceramic roosters in her kitchen as well.

If/when you do the tray as Jane has suggested, remember that you could place it indoors or out and on a little side table or ottoman or even on your bed--doesn't even have to go on the main table. No pressure, just think of it as "staging" your vignette. ;o)

Luvs, I have some beautiful rooster plates that normally are displayed on the kitchen counter "plate rail" I made.
Plus some large rooster figures and a cannister set. I really need to let these go instead of taking up space in the cabinet unused (and un-appreciated). If you come again in Jan, take them home with you.. if you want them!

Playing with a table setting will be real interesting with my Jazz Cat around. I'll have to lock him in the bedroom for sure. I had to laugh when Betty suggested setting things out, sleeping on it, and rearranging till I was happy. Jazz would never allow that. LOL. My other cats would be good, but definitely not him. I can't even sneak anything in, he knows when something new comes in and has to check it out. A 4-legged version of the Dish Police?

This Royal Rooster set is splendid too! Makes me think to my grand-mother's family that lives in the countryside and that we used to visit on the weekends when I was a child.

This has the taste of the safety I felt at that time, thinking that "real life" those of the countryside lived and things that tend to disappear as - at least here - farmers sell their fields and people who acquire them build Lego and Monopoly styled houses instead of keeping on grewing things that we would eat or having cows that would produce milk.

Oooops! Still a bit nostalgic when I see something like the set you have.

Dom, I know what you mean. They call it "Suburban Sprawl" here in the U.S.

Karen..I think Jazz is feeling left out and jealous,
of all the 'Fondeling and Fussing' you do to
    your pretties.
    Being a Teenager...he's testing you,
    and flexing his muscles.
    He needs attention...and
He needs to be 'Jazzed' up!

I was in a shop in town, and the owner's Calico named
Caramel...was sitting there in all his splender, 'Jazzed Up'... wearing a Fru Fru Ruffeled -
    Glittery Collar.
    All ready for Halloween!
Of course everyone who came in, made a huge fuss, and he just sat there...With a look, like...
'Are You Finished...Get Over It' ..
However, you can see..he loved every minute of it!

So, maybe your Jazz has 'deep seeded' issues, and
    maybe All His Acting Out...
Is His way of telling you...
    I WANT >>> 'Center Stage'

    I couldn't resist..
