Christmas tree finial

I bought a cheap Christmas tree finial at the Dollar Tree Store. It was a shiny red, but I wasn't really satisified with the paint that was already on it (for $1.00, I guess that's what you get). I bought some metallic red paint (Folk Art) and gave it a few coats. It wasn't as dark of a red as I wanted (the original paint was a darker red) I mixed some Folk Art Outdoor Opaque Engine Red, the darkest red acryllic paint I had to the metallic red and painted it again. Then I sprayed it with a clear sealer hoping it would give it a shiny look. It reminds me of red lipstick..lol. Is this red ok? I'm also thinking maybe it needs some decorating. Just not sure what to do with it. Thanks.

I think I would paint (bottom ball section) alternating squares with a gold metallic paint, also paint in gold that middle skinny section and the bottom section. Then coat all the non-gold areas with craft glue and add a dark red glitter.

You could do wonders with your little $ find~rinestones, beads, glitter, flowers, ribbon~get your glue gun out, girl! LOL

bourbonlady, I'll try the glitter and gold metallic paint like you said, but maybe not on every other square. patty_cakes, maybe a large bead at the very top, and some rhinestones on every other square?? MAYBE...lol. I can't come up with ideas as easy as most of you people. I have to see something and then do it, or get ideas from other people. Anyway, I'll do some experimenting and see what looks best before I do any gluing or painting on .

How about a tiny pink flower on one and a pink rhinestone on the other? Why pink, you ask? Because it's the color of my main tree and it will look sooooo pretty when you send it to me. LOL

My parents have a finial exactly like the picture, but in silver. Mine is a light-up electric my DH bought for me years ago.

Donnas, don't feel bad, I'm "idea challenged" too. Seeing things others come up with often amazes me, and other times I feel like whacking my head and saying why didn't I think of that. LOL.

I think gold accents would be very pretty on this.

I discovered the glitter glue with snowflakes in it (or stars) last year at Michaels and LOVE that stuff. Its fun to play with!

Donnas, I tried to fix up one I bought a few years ago and found that sometimes less is best! LOL I think maybe just a thin gold line around the sections on the bottom ball and then color in the piece at the base and where the two balls are connected with the gold. I love glitter on these too, but I find I'm not very good at getting glitter on evenly--then it looks blotchy. Anyone got any good tips for applying glitter? Luvs

I think it's kind of cool, and I know metallic paint doesn't photograph well, so . . . let me ask you this. Where are you planning on using it?

You can got back to the dollar store and get some ornaments and paint them to match. Especially if you're trying to create a more modern, simple look for your tree.

You could try to find ribbon to match it (or at least picks up the red you used) and decorate the tree with that.

You can pull out some of your ornies and find some colors/themes to use in embellishing the finial.

You have lots of options here, just keep playing with it a bit.

What Luvs, 'less is better'? I'm shocked!!LOL

If you want to use glitter on the whole thing, use a spray adheisive, then roll in glitter. Sprinkle the glitter on aluminum foil.

You can also buy a glitter paint in most craft stores. It's more than enough for your finial, and you'll be surprised how many other things will *need* holiday 'glitter-ing'. I like the irridescent.

Let us know what you decide. ;o)

I keep seeing the word ornies....what is that....

Hi Two Months, it's just short for "ornaments". LOL Funny how we all tend to take shortcuts because we type so much on here. I like to use "decs" for decorations too. And if you stick around here, you will probably see "DP" which means "Dish Police" (or our DH's). LOL Glad you asked instead of thinking we were speaking a strange language! ;o) Luvs
