How about something primitive

I've been looking at everyones beautiful decorations, the roses, the crystal, the silver, I'm starting to get sad.....

I live in an old house with deer heads on the wall, camafloge all over and really no pretties. Does anyone have an idea to decorate that. Besides Santa hats on the deer of course. We did hang 2 Jeff Gordon blue Christmas balls on the antlers last year but I won't say anything here about a deer with blue balls. :o)

    ohiojudy,
Oh, I love the more rustic decorating too, it is very homey and welcoming. In fact one of my tablesettings that I will be doing (after hospital visit recovery anyways) will be a "Rustic, nature, manly inspired tablesetting" Reds, golds, plaids, I got alot of nice accessories from Walmart this year, they have antler wreaths, feather balls, rustic trees, candles embedded with pine branch materials, ornaments.
For your deer head on the wall you can put a simple or elaborate plaid ribboned wreath around the neck. Thru your living area you can use bright red Christmas balls, rich greens, gold, pine cones, accessorize with a plaid or hunter green throws, brass items.. candlesticks, baskets, etc... sort of giving it a Ralph Lauren type of "look".

My back deck is very rustic looking with a tree with white lights and and nature type decorations. I have a couple real birdnests and life size artificial birds with feathers that look real, popcorn/cranberry garland, plaid bows, holly berries. Any thing that is shaped with grapevines, lots of pinecones, and nature related will work. Also homespun fabrics, wooden bead garland - primitive type Santas, snowmen and angels will add to the country look. I decorate in all styles because I like everystyle. Google 'country Christmas decorations' and you will get a wealth of ideas. Here are a couple of my country looks....

Very cute rustic decorations there Lynne. I love the country/prim decorating

A nice primitive site is called "primmart.com" - it's comprised of gals who love that look and sell their goods on eBay or have websites. From that site you can find many links for prim sites. Another idea is to just type "primitive Christmas decorating" in your web browser line.

A heads up about the Walmart Christmas decorations this year they have an aisle with very rustic ornaments and decor. I almost bought a sitting deer that was made out of some kind of natural seeds or bark. Very nice things wreaths also

The lodge look, or adirondack style, is very big these days, I think you should be able to find lots of stuff that fits right in. Lots of pine cones, birchbark ornaments and candles, coarse sacking ribbons, rusted-look bells, fun accents with bear, moose, and other animals. Use a buffalo-plaid blanket or throw as a tree skirt, perhaps. I was at Target today and they had a whole aisle of cute stuff in this vein. I've seen adorable birchbark covered animals at several places, including Target.

With the trophies and such on the walls, I would definitely suggest maintaining a Rocky Mountain Lodge or English Hunt Club/Lauren-y kind of look. I would also suggest making sure that you include a few things that are overscaled to lend a certain 'Designer' look - IE: putting a big wreath around the stag trophies, big wide ribbon, LARGE pinecones, big natural branches - just cram it all in - the more the merrier! It does make a difference to balance all the smaller items with large ones - think big basket of big pinecones with lots of small ornaments tucked in and you will get the idea.

You can have a lot of fun with your house!

I agree with Jim.....scale matters......big bows, Large baskets of large pine cones.....a huge grapevine wreath simply adorned with big wooden stars painted in rustic colours.
Make a huge twig frame.....4 fairly straight twigs secured with wire at each corner cross-over, and then from it you could again hang stars at different lengths, or ornaments, big sexy Christmas Bulbs......it will look great.....and burn ever-green fragrant candles.....OH and boil on the stove....cinnamon, orange rinds, nutmeg...but watch it, so it doesn't dry up, make sure there is plenty of water....
    Anyway...hope this helps too.

Christmas with fresh evergreens, grapevine, pine cones, etc. lends itself so well to the rustic look I think. I'm trying to give my little home a rustic look. I do lots of grapevine, dried flowers (silver king, tansy, cockscomb, wheat. I always do a real tree. White birch logs and red osier dogwood twigs would also be a nice touch too. I personally love the rustic look so much more than fancy-elegant Christmas decorations. Not that I don't love those too, but I'm a country girl at heart. I envy that your home already has that look--I'm struggling to give my boxy little home that look.

I love Maddya's suggestions. I'm sure you will come up with something wonderful for this Christmas.

I love the rustic look to, on our tree we have simple raffia bows, plaid ribbon on the top with steamers of it hanging down, pinecones from the yard, red berries, oraments of moose, deers, snowmen & santas in lumberjack outfits. Sooo cute! In our bath room we have a fishing theme, soooo that is where santa in his fishing gear is now.also the rustic black bear T.P. holder has a red plaid bow around his neck '') Fill an old wicker basket with pinecones & string lights thru it (sooo neat lookin) hot glue some twigs around a couple of candles set it in a wooden bowl with greenery & pinecones & maybe a few red berries I really like different size candles or just tie a simble bow of raffia or plaid ribbon around the candles after ya put on the twigs. country is sooo fun to work with, just let your imagination run wild! have fun, Jan

I decorate with a prim theme. In my dining room I made a twig tree that is simple and cute. I went out in yard, gathered a bunch of large twigs and put them in a big crock. I decorated with snowflakes and icicles. Very simple and very prim.
In my kitchen I decorate all my old "antiques" with ribbons. On my hutch I use garland, homespun, cinnamon sticks, bowls of gingerbread men. Stick candy and candy canes in old canning jars. Fill old tins with cookie cutters and what ever.
Once you get started the ideas just come. With prim you can't go wrong.
If you are crafty there is a forum sisters ar hear over at the delphi forum site with lots of free patterns.
    have fun.
