Does anybody have extended warranties on their appliances?

How about extended warranties on luxury appliances?

Does it pay?

Please tell me about your experiences.

Yes, we have an extended warranty on our new Thermador ME oven. We purchased the oven + matching Therm conv/MW and a Miele DW just a few days ago. The only one we warrantied was the oven, simply because of some of the issues mentioned re wall ovens on other posts here on GW. Felt it was best to have the warranty rather than be sorry. The Conv. MW - cheaper to replace in 3-4 years if problems arise. The Miele we figured from our research and comments here, had an excellent reputation and for most part, no problems, so we decided to chance it and not get the warranty.

It depends what kind of extended warranty and on what appliances. I would get it on some, and others i would not. mainly appliances that use water i would and maybe a range, and all the others i wouldn't. p.s. I am an appliance salesman.

I bought the Sears Masterplan (covers an annual service, repairs and food insurance) on the new Samsung FD. It was expensive-- about $350 for 3 years. At the time, I thought it was a good idea for the refrigerator given the level of electronics in the appliance, ice maker, water dispenser, new model, etc. Should I cancel?

We bought the EW on all our new kitchen appliances: Bosch range, KA DW and frig. I'm about to use it on the frig due to funky sounds it's making. Got everything from Sears, and while the EX's are expensive, they cover everything, even cosmetic. Their warranties included annual maintenance too.

With all the electronics in appliances today, to me, it's just piece of mind. Others will disagree.

I posted about service plans on the laundry forum. Not only is there an answer that applies equally to all appliances, the lans themselves are not equal. From what I've seen, Sears is the most expensive adn in the middle in terms of what they provide.

Since Samsun is one of the top rated refrigerators, the odds would be that you don't need a 3 year plan. Where you need protection most is inthe first year (covered bythe manufacturer) and after 5-7-10 years. If you keep a plan up that long, you may have paid for the appliance a second time, not get a full replacement and could have your options limited by a plan rather than a new marketplace.

Also, I have not read the fine print of the Sear's plan, but I have seen other plans that not only offer annual service but may require it to get later repairs. Make sure that you calendar the annual service if you fall into that category or you may not get what you think you bought.

I went to Sears to cancel my extended warranty purchase. They explained to me that I can cancel any time during the manufacturer's 1-year warranty for a full refund. So, if my Samsung fridge seems to be working just fine during the first year, I can cancel that $350 warranty for a full refund. Seems like a good deal; I should be able to tell in the first year if I have a lemon.

Put the anniversary of your purchase date on your calendar with a reminder at least a week ahead. They bank on a certain percentage forgetting to cancel.

lascat RE: Sears plans are in middle of what they provide

That is not true, Sears plans provide the most of any plan or warranty, that is why they are so expensive.

    They cover all parts
    all labor
Annual maintanence service which is great for a frig
    cosmetics
    no lemon guarantee
    canceleable within 1st year
transferable to new owner for no extra money
10% discount on accessories like water filters or waterline, gas lines, etc.
    24/7 non technical tele support
$250 of food loss on refrigerators
    and more

I sold appliances at Sears for 2 years, and I recommend you keep the warranty. I would, the annual maintenance in itself is worth the money. The average cost of getting a maintanence without the sears plan MPA is $120 per instance, you get 3 in 3 years, which would equat to $360, but on top of that you get all the other coverage as well.
on appliances this is what i would get a warranty on: RF, DW, Washing machine, water heater(just because its so cheap, and maybbbeee a range if it is a high end unit with convection etc.
