How much longer....really

We are 2.5 months into a major addition remodel and I am ready for everybody to be done, our contractor had estimated 3 months... so I was prepared for 4, but I have reached a point now where I want everyone out of my house... (it is 97+ here today and our new airconditioner...part of the project is not working... so I am abit grumpier than normal)

anyway, we are about 1/3 of the way thru tile...wow it takes longer than I had thought... all my cabinets are waiting in the garage and the painters are itching to get in, so we have paint, install cabinets, then wait for granite then wait for shower glass... I feel like we are never going to finish.

I guess my question is... realistically how much more time am I looking at from when tile is finished...I am hoping that will be done in about a week (2baths, laundry rm, and large sunroom) what kind of time did it take you to get finished? I need to see the light at the end of the tunnel...

mm22, as we've this week started our fifth month on our addition/remodel project, I definitely understand your feelings! :) I was in a groove with the contractors coming every day for awhile, and then suddenly a few weeks ago, I realized I was just ready for them to be done, to have our house back, to be rid of the constant pressure to make decisions, order items a half step ahead of the contractor's need for them, and do things (mostly the painting, which I'm doing myself). It's 100 here in the east today, but at least our A/C works (and the new, secondary wall-mounted A/C works -- now, finally, without leaking condensation water all over the place!) I've been getting up and doing some of the outside trim painting between 6:00 and 7:30 -- when it's "only" in the low 80's! -- before showering and going to work. Yeah, I'm ready for this to be done! ;)

As for your question, it depends on a number of things, but one thing you mentioned makes me think it's going to take more than a week. After the tile, you have to install the cabinets; that's probably only a day. But then you said granite. Unless these are pre-cut vanity tops you already have ready to go, you have to have the granite company come out and template once the cabinets are in. Some granite places can schedule that on a few days notice; some need a week or more in advance to schedule the templater. Once they template, depending on the granite place, it will be a week to two weeks before they have your granite ready and come back to install it. If you're using granite for wall cabs or door curbs or jambs, that does all have to be in place before the glass people. So even if you can pre-schedule the glass company for the day after granite installation, you've then got at least a few days or more until they come back to install your glass.

Now here's the good news: you'll see the progress and feel like things are really moving towards completion once you move from tiling to having the cabinets in. But realistically, it doesn't sound likely to get finished in just a week.

Just a thought: you mentioned needing to finish tiling before the cabinets go in. Depending on the type of cabinets you're using, might you be able to put the cabinets in after the floor tile but before the wall tile, and then tile to the cabinets? That's what we've done in both our bathrooms. This allows the scheduling of the granite templating, the granite fabrication and the granite installation to proceed immediately, while you proceed to work on tiling walls at the same time. That could save you a week or more, depending on the amount and speed of the tile work.

HA...ha I soooooo know we won't be done in a week, I meant I hope the tile is finished in about a week.... I was depressed because I had just spoken to the granite places..and learned that even after my cabinets are in place they may take a week to come to template and then as much as 3 weeks to get everything fabricated... we have 4 different granites going in from two different places..... then I can start messing with the shower glass..... I was hoping for completion in 3 weeks or so... now looking more like 2 months..... I am so glad we aren't painting...my walls look like a crazy man went at them with all the samples I have been through... I think I have tried every shade of blue they make.

This frightens me ... a lot. We're going to start work on our reno in August: ripping the roof off half the house, raising it, putting it back on and reroofing, putting in a new bathroom and a new deck. The GC has said it will take six weeks, which seems ambitious to me. I thought I would be safe thinking more like two months, but after reading about these experiences, I'm thinking I best not get my heart set on that either.

No advice for you or guess on a timeline ... just a lot of sympathy.

wi-sailorgirl.. don't panic too much, just enjoy your quiet house until August..... even though I knew what I was getting into... it is so hard having a million strangers crawling all over your house and expecting you to make major (at least in my opinion) decisions at a moments notice. also love my contractor freaking me out that I need to get certain things selected ordered and in ASAP only to have them sit in our garage for weeks because they aren't ready for them. we tore off an old sunroom and added a 2 story addition to give us a new masterbath and closet...and at the same time new furnace and a/c and are moving the laundry room upstairs and enlarging and total gut of the kids' bath
it was a lot to do at once especially as it left us with only our powder room downstairs and a shower in the garage... that gets old real fast.
good luck to you, your six week time estimate is kind of funny.....but you never know, look what they do in a week on that extreme home makeover show... they did one about an hour from our house last year in my parents' town, it was crazy how fast it went.

wi-sailorgirl, they probably can build it in six weeks. The time really adds up depending how you finish the interior. Simple tile floor, painted walls, basic vanity and fixtures might go fast. Tile the walls to the ceiling, add a strip of accent tile, build a custom shower, granite countertops, etc. and the extra time begins to add up. Just the granite can add 2-4 weeks between waiting for templating, fabrication and waiting for installation.

In our current master bathroom project, we're using the same granite as the countertop to create a mirror surround between two upper cabinets. So we had to (1) get the floor tiled and grouted, (2) get the base cabinets installed, (3) get the granite company out to template, (4) wait 10 days for the granite countertops to be installed, (5) get the shower floor and walls tiled while waiting for the granite counters, (6) get the granite countertops installed, (7) get the upper cabinets installed (because they sit on the granite), (8) get the granite company back to template for the mirror surround now that the upper cabinets and top shelf (light bridge) are in place, and to template the shower entry now that the tile is in place, (9) tile the other walls while waiting for the granite, (10) get the granite mirror and shower surrounds installed, (11) get the glass company out to measure for the shower glass, (12) wait for the glass, (13) install the glass! (We're currently at stage 9!) Clearly, this project could have been done much more quickly if we hadn't added some of the complexity to it that we decided we wanted. But it'll be worth it... :)

I just want to say there is so much support for you mm2. Can't get this from your friends and neighbors.
This site is a haven for renewing your sanity. My questions have been simple compared to yours but the answers are superb. Our new friends here on this forum have put a lot of effort into their answers haven't they. They are good, caring people. You should invite them to go on over to your place once it is done. They will probably bring their own drinks and coasters. That's just how it is with these folks.
