It makes total sense to remove it...at least aesthetically. It will also brighten your bathroom and make it appear larger. I wouldn't care for your husband's plan at all :( I know it's more work to remove it tho.

Use nice looking light fixtures instead. Sconces, ceiling chandelier, recessed lights etc to create zones.

Soffits (unless required for plumbing etc) were a bad design idea then, and today :)

Ok, then, it's almost done! Thank you both!! Sconces would be my first choice, but they won't fit even if I replace our wall mirror with two 24" wide mirrors for each sink because we have recessed medicine cabinets that are built into each side wall that are hinged near the corners.

I'm trying to replace the old medicine cabinets anyway. I'm looking for a couple of mirrored medicine cabinets that I could wall mount over each sink but haven't found them yet . . .

We had the same issue and I chose to remove the soffit. It really opened up the bathroom. I'm glad we removed it.

I know this thread is old, but I am wanting to replace our bathroom soffit with fluorescent lights to a bar light and I'm wondering if you can tell me how you moved the junction box? Did you hire an electrician or do it yourself?
