Soffit over vanity . . . remove or keep?

I would like to remove the soffit (7'L x 2'D x 1'H) which is attached to the ceiling over the double vanity in our master bedroom. It serves no purpose other than to enclose the fluorescent light tubes that I would also like to remove. I would then move the junction box from the ceiling to the wall just above the mirror over each sink and install a three-lamp bar light over each sink.

My husband prefers to leave the soffit and install the bar lights under the soffit over the top of the wall mirror (84" x 36"). I don't think 10" of vertical space between the top of the mirror and the bottom of the soffit is enough space to squeeze in a bar light unless the lamps hang down in front of the mirror.

Has anyone else struggled with this decision? If so, what did you do? If not, does it make sense to remove or keep?
