Laundry: Duets setup help!

I x-posted this in the laundry forum, but I need as much help as I can get :)

I think I've decided to get the 9400 series W/D for our new build. We are a family of 6, and need the large capacity.

My current obsession is what to do about the cabinets that surround them. I have lots of room in the laundry room, so space is not much of an issue.

Do you have your Duets under counter? If so, do you find the 42" counter too hard (high) to work on?

If you don't have them under counter, did you use pedestals?

Either under counter, or pedestals, do you have upper cabinets above? Do you find that the depth of the W/D makes it difficult to access those cabinets?

If you don't have cabinets, where do you store your detergents and things?

I'm begging for pictures here of these larger FL setups so that I can actually visualize exactly how the space should be set up to function the best.

Thanks!!

I didn't have any problems working on the higher counter over the W/D. You can have the higher counter for folding over the W/D and then have regular cabinets on the sides.

I have them on the shorter pedestals (10" I think) that do not hold detergent, etc. I am tall and wanted them raised so I didn't have to bend over so far to transfer loads. I use the tops for folding. I didn't need storage underneath because I have adjacent cabinets and keep the detergent, bleach, fabric softener, etc., there. I have a window over my w/d.

FYI, several builders around here build a pedestal for the w/d. One had a pull out for the dog food and water bowls. Dh was concerned about that so we didn't try it.

Justme- do you have uppers above your W/D? Can you reach them just fine? What depth are they?

txgal- if I move the sink to another wall, I could put the WD under a window. But, I'd only have a small cabinet to hold the detergent in a lower beside the W/D. I'm only 5'4, so I can't even fathom folding on a 52" counter top! I'm trying to decide if I can handle the "short" 42".

It seems like every decision that I make only causes 50 more problems to deal with- lol. The joys of building.

    Thanks (from another Texan).

    Anyone else?

I have mine on the manufacturer's pedestal's and they are way too tall for me to access a shelf that is more than 6" deep so I've opted for no shelves above the machines when we move. I have cabinets across from the machines on the opposite wall because the machines and sink take up one wall. Small laundry room!!

Here is mine. Don't look too closely at my unfinished cabinets!

I love the folding space provided by the wide countertop. I'm 5'6 1/2" tall and can reach the bottom shelf of the cabinet above without any problem. I keep a step ladder close by for reaching the higher shelves (I actually have four step ladders placed all over the house for this reason). For instance, I can open the door of the short cabinet on the left if I stand on my tippy toes but I can't reach inside (still need to put the rod for hanging clothes under that cabinet).

    Hope this helps!

Yes, I could reach the first two shelves with out getting out my step stool. We kept all the small laundry stuff up there but the Costco pail of detergent was under the sink.

    Kelly,

Thanks for the photo. I was wondering how to setup mine up with the top as a folding table and your setup looks perfect.

    Kelly,

Thank you so much! So, the counter over the W/D, is that 36" deep?

I wanted to do the butcher block counter tops from IKEA in my laundry room, but I think I shot that idea (at least over the W/D) by doing this :) Like I say....one decision seems to only lead to 50 more issues :)

My new laundry room is a pretty good size, but since it butts up to the garage, we recessed the washer and dryer about 6 inches into the garage so that I could reach the cabinets above. I really was planning on having the w/d under counter tops, but chickened out. I like the height of the w/d with the pedestals-SO easy on your back! And I opted out of a sink in the laundry room. Didn't think I'd ever use it, so there's more room for folding.

My counter is 32" deep and from the floor to the top of the counter is 41" high.

Superchick- thank you so much for your picture! Good idea recessing into the garage- I'll check into that!!

Kelly- thanks for the measurements! That is less than the "recommended", but it's what I'd rather have.

Any more pictures, or testimonies of cabinets above the duets?

We have not moved in yet but this is our set up which will have the Duet washer and dryer. The sink will be on the left of the units and there is a lower counter with bars above to the right. Wish I had a better picture.

I have one of those recessed vent boxes for the dryer so there is plenty of room in the back.

    Thanks zemmie- that does help.

It seems like this may be one of my "mountain out of a molehill" things- not nearly as big of a deal as I am trying to make it out to be :)

Kelly- I'll pass that info on to the builder. That does help!

    Thank you all!!!
