New poster - introduction

Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for more than a year and I finally have something to contribute. We are building in central Nebraska, we have been living in a doublewide for 15 years (saving and dreaming for when we could build) and finally broke ground for our new home at the end of April. Unfortunately we picked the wettest year that anyone around here can remember and we have been fighting torrential rain and wind every step of the way. If I were to tell the stories this post would be 10 feet long.... the good news is we are so very close to having a complete roof and with any luck everything will be closed in and water proof by the end of next week. I'm going to try to include some pictures of where we are right now. I look forward to chatting with you all in the months to come.

Welcome, huskergirl. Looks like you're off to a good start. We're looking forward to seeing the rest of your build. Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations, huskergirl! It's very exciting when you feel like you have real progress. I know what you mean about the rain - we're building in Missouri. Who knew it would rain this much?!

Anyway, once you get under roof you can relax a bit, because you won't be so dependent on the weather.

    Keep sharing pix!

Hi, thanks for coming to share with us. Looks very nice. Love your view.

I've been wondering this and hope, as a newbie, you don't mind me posing this question on your thread.

I sit and admire all of those photo's of you folks who are building out in the middle of what I call "God's country" and I ask myself, how do you go about finding out if the land is for sale? It's not like there is a "for sale" sign posted out in the middle of nowhere, is there? I'm just curious how you know there is a patch of land for sale in the middle of undeveloped terrain?

I envy you, believe me. If I could, I'd love to live in the middle of nowhere with only the deer and birds as my neighbors. Thanks

Thank you all for the kind comments and a big thank you to those who helped link up my pictures properly. To answer the question about the location - I should have been more descriptive. My husband is in the farming/livestock business and we own the 160 acres where we live. Our old house is actually sitting about 200 feet away from the new build. There are both good and bad things about living in such a remote area - most of which have been discussed on this board. The closest town is 10 miles away but only has a population of 2,000 - there is a mid sized town (about 30,000) 25 miles from me, but if you want to do any real shopping or find entertainment we drive about 1 1/2 hours to Omaha. And finally, to answer the question about how to find undeveloped land.... come to Nebraska there is an abundance of it.

Welcome Huskergirl! I bet you are excited to get going. Everything looks great. We are in NE also and just finishing up our build. DH is a huge Husker fan, so I'll throw in the requiste "Go Big Red"! Keep us posted on your build. How great to be living so close to the building action! Good luck! Jaymie

Thanks for the explanation. 160 acres. Wow, that's fabulous.

Welcome! Looks like your build is coming along nicely! We are building in southeast South Dakota but have yet to break ground.

I also grew up on a farm, 8 miles from the nearest town which has 1200 people. :) (In northwest Iowa...)

Looks beautiful! Looking forward to seeing more pics as you get further along.

A friend owns property in the Southwest. It's twenty miles outside the nearest town. He'd love to build but can't find workmen willing to travel that far! Was that a problem for you?

chisue: We didn't have any trouble finding a contractor, things are so spread out around here that they expect to travel to a job site. However, I think that it makes things go a lot slower because they have to really split up their crews between job sites so the most I have ever seen working out here at one time is a 4 person crew.
