Thermostatic tempering device -- experiences?

My husband and I bought an 1898 house that needed all new plumbing (and a whole new kitchen) because we're just that crazy. I've been lurking here for a couple of months, and I'm so glad to have found this group! I've learned so much in a short time and have also found great inspiration for designs, too.

For our daughter's bathroom, I bought a three-handle tub/shower set from California Faucets that I really love:

...Only to find that here in Chicago, the building code requires anti-scald protection. The valve that came with the set isn't thermostatic.

Do I need to replace the valve with a thermostatic one, or is there another option? I really don't want to switch from three handles to a single handle trim.

California Faucets recommended installing a thermostatic tempering device, which provides anti-scald protection, but I'm having trouble finding good info about it online. Is this a more expensive option than replacing the valve?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
