There's always baskets. Or maybe some of the cool "apothecary" type tchotchokes: natural sponges, green glass jars. How about a one of a kind piece of art?

SJ, we also purchased a vanity with the open bottom for our MB Reno. Will most likely do wire baskets, with neatly rolled towels. DH already knows he is never to touch them. I would love to do something more interesting, but we just are not that creative so I hope someone has some good ideas.

If you like the open space it wouldn't work, but you could find baskets with tops and use them as storage for not so neat towels and other junk. I did that with a coffee table. It looks more open than a closed wood structure, but still hides a lot of stuff.

Hi, I have an open shelf in my vanity and I worried about dust and dirt that comes in from the farm. This bathroom is off the kitchen, so it gets some hard handwashing use. It will also be the guest bathroom. I wanted spare towel sets that could be retrieved in clean condition, for the infrequent over night guest. I bought some boxes that have the lacy old time look the bathroom has and used them to hold towel sets. I have them stacked underneath. Got them cheap at Tuesday Morning store.

We have 2 baskets at the bottom of our open vanity in our master bath. One holds our dirty laundry. It's very convenient. When I do laundry, I just pull this basket out. The other basket is kind of like junk (hair dryer, extra toilet paper, trash bags, etc...). Our bathroom is very small, so lack of neatness is not noticeable down there.

I think wicker baskets are the best suggestion . You can find them at tjmaxx , different colours and sizes . They can hold hair dryer , extra toilet paper , even extra Cosco size bottles of shampoo, extra towels . Literally anything can go in there . I was recently at a Hyatt with a vanity in the bathroom with an open shelf and they had these wicker baskets with a hairdryer and extra towels .

I'm big on stealing design ideas from hotels!! (We designed the shampoo shelf in our last home based on something we saw at a Marriott)
