shower niche, timing??

Bill, Mongo, anyone.....

having a custom shower built, it is framed and the bathroom is sheetrocked. Shower surround is cement board (not sure of brand) and ceiling has blue board (bad lighting, maybe green) we want a niche in the back wall, above the seat, should it have been addressed before hanging the cement board, or will the tile guys cut a hole in it after the fact. need to address it before Monday morning if it is wrong. being water tight would be nice..... Thanks for all your advice and opinions.

If they're using a preformed niche, it can be cut in after the cement board is hung.

I custom build niches, so I frame them as I frame the shower walls.

For preformed, just like Bill wrote, some can be cut in after the backer board is hung...but some preformed ones do get hung first, and the backer board goes over the niche's flange.

Depends on which one you have.

The preformed niches I know abut, could be easily install either way, look at this link that will show you the process of how to install preformed
