Master Bathroom in Progress...

I am wanting to finish this bathroom but stuck on a few decisions and knew this would be the best place to ask. My daughter wants us to paint the bathroom "orange or somewhat" but I am not sure. I want it to look great when I complete the project, not just thrown together.

Any suggestions would be great..

Hi Sadler, What sort of "feel" are you looking for in your new bathroom? Relaxing and Spa like, or something that's going to wake you up in the morning? The orange you have in your photos is nice, but it's also very bright and energetic. Usually, people tend to want their master bath to have a soothing spa sort of feel to it and if that's the case with you, you may want to consider something a lot lighter that leans to the cooler side of the color wheel. We used SW Sea Salt in our bathroom, it's actually a gray that looks blue or green depending on the lighting. If you like the oranges, I would go with something very light and subtle so it adds a glow or warmth to the room.

I would love something relaxing and Spa (elegant) like but my daughter wants something energetic so I was hoping to get some ideas here. Do you have a picture of your bathroom?

A little bit of color goes a long way. She might be overpowered by 4 walls of bold orange color. Makeup and clothing colors will look "off". I may be a little confused. Is this the master bathroom or your daughter's bathroom?

It is the master bathroom. I know... I told her she could help in deciding some of the colors but she really went over a little. Are there any color suggestions you would recommend for this bathroom?

Are you starting from scratch? You've got a neutral tile. What color do you like? How do you want it to "feel"? I don't think anyone can suggest a color for you. Is it part of a master ensuite? Not sure what good it would do but here is a link to my master bathroom.
Good luck. No way could I live with that bright melon orange paint :o

Sadler, If you want spa like, orange is not going to do that for you. Here are pictures of our master, it's small and the color doesn't photo well in full shot, so I've tried to show some different angles. Like monicakm has said, a little color goes a long way. Cooler colors like grays, (which can look blue or green on the wall), blues and greens are going to be calming. Warmer colors like orange, yellows, reds and browns are going to be cozier feeling and depending on the shade, can be more energetic.

Maybe you should first go to a paint store and just start pulling cards of colors YOU like to first. That will help to narrow some choices down and to see where your taste really lean. Then from those, pick a few to sample on the walls. That will help you to narrow it down to just a few that offer what you're looking for. Then just let your daughter pick from those.

Pretty much ditto with what the other kids mentioned regarding color.

If you want "spa" then go for a soothing cool color.

You can appease your daughter by spicing up the room with warm accessories. Richly colored towels, perhaps a bit of brightly colored art on the wall. Bold floor mats. A bowl of brightly-colored soaps.

The gist being that the "permanent features" of the room will satisfy your desire for calm and cool. The removable and replaceable items can appease your daughter's desire for bright and bold.

I'm going to be the voice of dissention here. My new family bath, painted BM Pumpkin Blush, is totally soothing and comfortable. It's warm, cozy, and everyone's complexion looks good with this color (I have 3 daughters, so that matters, lol!) A relaxing, spa feel doesn't have to be confined to cool watery tones. It's all in how you put it together. I don't have finished "decorated" pics yet -- life got in the way of picture taking, lol! -- but here's one close to the end of the redo.

and here are some other inspiration pics....

This one isn't a residential bath, it's from a spa (can't remember where).....

Leigh, what a beautiful bathroom, you've done a great job.

As we've all said, it's really dependent on what she's looking for but you have also confirmed the colors you've brought in offer a "warm and cozy" feeling which is exactly what we were saying too. However, I still don't think that the color itself lends to the spa feel, it's the elements you've brought into the room and the way you've laid them out. That's a hard color to do that with, again, you did a wonderful job with it. --Lukki

    Hiya Lukki!

thanks for the kind words. One fine day (when it's clean!) I'll take some nice pics of the finished product & post them.

Anyway, you're right, generally a spicy color like orange can be hard to make soothing. I just wanted to show her that it can be done, because I think people are kind of afraid of using colors like that. But, as we've both said before, it's how you work with it, and what elements you combine that can make or break a design.

btw, orange was also my children's choice - it was the only color all three could agree on, lol!

Thank you for all of your ideas. I just don't know what to do. I am still taking ideas. All the baths shown are so nice. Any other color suggestions would be greatful. Kathi

The spa inspirations get a lot of natural light: that makes a big difference with yellows and oranges.

Oranges and yellows can start to look dingy in artificial and low light rooms. Some peachy oranges are very flattering to some skin tones, while some spa like colors aren't...it really depends upon the room and the exposure.

Look forward to seeing that Leigh!!! It must be a trend I haven't heard of yet, because my daughter & her husband have a similar color in her kitchen!

Sadler, maybe you could go with something like BM Waterfall or BM Peacock. Both of these are deep aqua colors I've seen in other bathrooms and are simply gorgeous. In my own home, I've used both Behr Grass Cloth & SW Celery and love them both. Grass Cloth is a darker citrus green and Celery is a light citrus green. They're both more energetic colors but are still very easy on the eyes. If you're inclined to stay within the warm color family, BM Aztec Brick or Apple Crisp are very pretty oranges too. Not quite as energetic as your daughters choice but all the same, energetic, warm and cozy. I got these colors from the Personal Color Viewer on the Benjamin Moore site. I simply did a search for the color orange and tried out different shades on one of the bathroom pictures. Maybe if you try that you'll be able to get a small visual of what you might like to see in your space. -- Lukki

Palimpsest has a good point about lighting. I have only the one small window, which prevents the orange from getting too washed out by natural light, which tends to be bluish and is complementary to orange. All of my lights are 40 or 60 watt incandescents with frosted glass globes -- they give a rich warm light that makes the room even more warm & cozy. It's crazy, but you do have to take these things into consideration when you're thinking about colors.....

My 80% finished bath has floor tile just like yours and a white tub like yours. I used the countertop color Riverbed by ECO Cosentino to inspire the wall color and looked at BM Peacock Blue the previous poster mentioned. We used Whipple Blue and it looks great. (Dark wood vanity). Get your countertop in or finalized then pick a color...that's my advice. And yes to blues for me, no to oranges.

I am a HUGE orange fan. My daughter's bathroom will be orange and jalapeno! Why do the kids love orange??? :)

However, I think that if you want "soothing", orange is a tough one to work with. While the pictures of the orange bathrooms above do show some beautiful BAs, I think that it's harder to get that just right soothing look with a color like orange. You need to pick the exact right vanity/tile/counter colors and accessories to make sure the color is toned down.

If you want a safer and easier route to a soothing spa....I'd pick a blue or green or gray. Love the Benjamin Moore colors:

    Gray--Edgecomb, Hazy Skies
    Blue--Fresco, Overcast, Silver Mist
    Green--Hampton Green, Camouflage

Are you keeping the white vanity and sink? If, so I think the orange is too stark for sure--you need the dark wood to balance it. The beige tile can go with any of the softer colors.
