Range Hood Question

Does anyone know of a 600+cfm range hood that only requires a 6 inch duct? I've looked around, and it seems most require 8 inch. We only have room for the 6 inch and must use an internal blower. The total duct run (including adding add'l feet for 90 degree turns) is 12-14 feet.

FYI this is for a 36 inch 6 burner Viking

Alternatively, I'd love to have your thoughts on the following scenarios:

1) use a 300 (effective 450) VAH that uses a 6 inch duct. Note that I rarely use more than 2 burners at once.

2) reduce the 8 inch duct to a 6 inch one using some sort of reducer. I spoke w VAH about this and they were adamant that it shouldn't be done.

Thanks so much for any advice!

You may have some additional options. A duct does not necessarily need to be ground. What you want to do is keep the cross sectional area about the same. You could use a rectangular cross-section to pass through a constricted space. You could go all the way from the hood to the exterior wall with the rectangular section or change to a round cross-section. If a rectangular cross-section will work for you the cross-sectional area should probably be somewhat larger than a round cross-sectional area. This is due to some flow losses which are dependent on the shape of the duct. I believe the flow loss will become more pronounced as the rectangle becomes less square.

Thanks much. I just spoke with a very helpful person at Prestige, which has a 600 cfm blower with a 6 inch duct that will work. The particular hood they recommend has a six inch hole which they usually recommend to connect to an 8 inch duct, but since my run is relatively short could connect to a 6 inch duct. this eliminates the problem of narrowing the flow of air.

Anyone else? Any opinions on prestige?

I have a 58" Prestige insert with an external blower sitting in my barn. I am pleased with the quality of the product and the post sales support I have received from Prestige. I had some engineering questions about designing the enclosure for the insert. Once my vendor (EuroStoves) connected me with the correct person at Prestige I got almost instantaneous responses to my e-mails. All my questions were promptly answered with good information.

Another satisfied (so far) customer re: Prestige. Chris Ricci is extremely responsive and has been very helpful, patiently going over my situation and needs more than once. My insert and remote blower is ordered and we expect delivery later this week.

I'm sure you were told that the narrower the duct opening, the louder your hood will be. Another reason a Prestige might best fit your needs, since it has infinite variable flow speed control (on a dial vs most others that have low/med/high presets). The lights also dim, which is another feature I liked.

    Good luck!
