Surfergal, thanks for the information. The one that shows putting on the fusible web I think will work the best. I was afraid of the sweater unraveling but that would take care of it. If any one out there has actually done it I would like to hear from you also. Thanks for the help. Mary_Ann_MD

Hi Mary Ann... As I understand your post, you have some pullover sweaters that fit you, but you'd rather they be cardigans.

The thing is, the chest circumference of a pullover is less than the circumference of a cardigan... because the cardigan is made to overlap in front so it can be buttoned, and also because a cardigan is usually made to fit a bit more loosely so it will be comfortable being worn over another sweater or blouse. [Sorry for the run-on sentence!] (The sleeves are sometimes narrower in a pullover than a cardigan for the same reasons.)

I am afraid that if you cut up the center of a pullover to make it into a cardigan, it will have to be a cardigan that is never buttoned, and also the front edges will be several inches apart.

I have made lots of the "sweatshirt-into-cardigans," and I always start with a sweatshirt that is at least a size bigger than the person usually wears. For example, if I want the resultant cardigan to fit a ladies' size M, I start with a ladies' L sweatshirt. And sweatshirts are cut fuller than knit sweaters, too.

If you are sure you want to convert your pullovers, I suggest you try it first on an expendable sweater - you can get them very cheaply at a thrift store. Who knows, you just might find some cardigans at the thrift store that will do and save your pullovers for next winter!

And if you do go ahead with the conversions, yes, DO stabilize the area where you will be cutting with fusible web so the whole sweater doesn't unravel!
