Sleeveless dresses

Lately I have been noticing that a lot of female television personalities have been wearing sleeveless dresses during the winter months. Is this a fairly new thing or am I just now taking note of it? I could understand if they were residing in tropical locations but many of these women (think TV news reporters) reside in Chicago or New York. Did Michelle Obama start this trend? I guess I am sensitized to it because my upper arms are my least favorite body part. It might be jealousy!

I agree. Michelle Obama. I have good upper arms, but I am not interested in wearing sleeveless in the winter. Not sure why this is catching on.

Sleeveless dresses and bare legs and no coat! My 19 yo does this all the time. All her friends dress up the same way. She did wear a sweater on New Years Eve but I think it was to appease me.

How can you have fun on a date or at a party when your teeth are chattering?

I also think that it is strange to see a professional on TV looking like they are on their way to a cocktail party.

They do it here also. I don't know if this is a new trend in local news, but all of our female anchors and reporters are extremely sexy looking. Long hair, pretty, and tight dresses. It's almost like a competition among the local news stations! lol

Well, I do think it's hard to even find a dress with sleeves these days! When I was looking for a dress to wear to a holiday party in Dec., I noticed more than ever that 95% of the dresses were sleeveless. And this is in New England, not Florida! As the owner of fat upper arms myself, I am NOT a fan of the trend.

Same thing with wedding dresses. I can't remember the last time I saw a bride (or bridesmaid, for that matter) wearing anything other than sleeveless, even when it was less than flattering on them.

I needed something for New Years Eve, and ended up with sleeveless. I don't like my arms either so I needed a dressy cover up to hide them.

I am one of those people who always is 10 degrees colder than everyone else.

It makes me cold just watching what these college graduate journalism degree holders who happen to be women are expected to wear as a part of their profession.

I was also dress shopping lately, and literally everything was sleeveless!

I thought I was the only one seeing sleeveless cocktail party dresses at the evening forecast. I've noticed our local weather gal's clothing choices more this winter than last.

Geez, it looks a bit ridiculous when its 20 degrees, yet she's wearing a sleeveless dress/topped outfit to "report" the freezing snowy weather. Really, lol?

I get that she works out, runs marathons, etc. However, I would bet that the average female viewer doesn't sport similar tan toned arms. It is the middle of winter, and most people dress accordingly. It isn't a cocktail party, it is the news hour. I do not believe it is a Michelle Obama trend. In our market, I believe it is just the one meteorologist dressing to impress, i.e.; inappropriately for the job. Call me snarky, but I can't think of another professional earning a similar salary who could get away with these clothing choices, yet still have a job.

DH enjoys the weather, lol. I'm just taking a stab in the dark, but maybe that's the target audience? Glad I'm not the only one whose noticed this tv news/weather seasonal female clothing trend ;).

I agree! Was just saying so to DH the other day as we watched Good Morning America....I'd like to see temperature/weather-appropriate attire. Sleeveless doesn't bother me in the summer or if a news person is broadcasting from Miami or something, but from NYC? In the middle of January? Please, put on a turtleneck! ;)

I've noticed all the sleeveless dresses. Even the most well groomed armpits are not that attractive. I'll be glad when this fad passes.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here: maybe it's hot under all those tv lights? I know, I know...that doesn't explain why the men are wearing suits and the women are dressed for warm weather and/or a cocktail party.

Or maybe all those women are like one of my sisters and are always hot?

Or maybe they're proud of their toned arms and want to show them off and it has nothing to do with ratings? You go girls, if you have guns, go ahead and highlight them. Speaking only for myself, I'm envious that they have arms they can show off. And that they aren't always cold.

I'm like Juliekcmo, I'm always colder than everyone else. I have always had trouble buying dresses since it seems most are sleeveless. I have to buy a jacket or sweater or something for warmth. It's not always easy to find a dress and something with sleeves that will work with it. I wear a lot of pants and jackets, instead of dresses, because it's easier to find stuff. And I'm not on tv. :-)

I ended up doing a search and this interesting article popped up.

Here is a link that might be useful: Carole Simpson Blog

That's a very interesting article. I was just thinking of something along those lines today. I was watching woman report on the murder trial of James Holmes, the Aurora movie theater shooter. She was made up like she was going to the senior prom. Lips glistening, eye makeup out the wazoo. Sparkly necklace and earrings. It just seemed so in appropriate for the story she was reporting.

There are no older female newscasters in my city but a couple of men who have been around for decades. The woman all have astounding figures (many enhanced)and yes, sleeveless tops with toned arms. I don't think anyone is listening to what is coming out of their mouths.

Maybe sour grapes on my part. My upper arms are revolting.

Luckily the news cast I watch still has the 'veteran' newscasters, a male & female team in the morning and late night, and afternoon to early evening casts are two women. The women are mature (over 40-closer if not already 50's) but they look very, very good and well groomed. They haven't fallen for the 'sexy' trend, thankfully.

I don't wear dresses, but I do think that the sleeveless trend is a nod to the FLOTUS. She's fit, fashionable, and fashion has been known to follow the FLOTUS style (Jackie).

I am so tired of the sleevless bridal gowns. Not even sleeveless, but the strapless ones. With a DD looking for a dress, we are having a tough time finding something that is not strapless!

Oh yes, the strapless wedding dresses. I have noticed that most of the girls who wear them spend a lot of time tugging and pulling the dress up during the festivities. It rather ruins the look.

Strapless seems to be de rigueur for weddings these days....the gal whose veil I'm working on will be strapless as will her bridesmaids...at least she's getting married in July when it will be warm...though I end up freezing more in the A/C than I do in the winter.

I used to wear turtle necks all winter long, but thanks to hot flashes, you'll now find me in short sleeves year round with a sweater or jacket of some sort ready to rip off at a moments notice. (Gives a whole new meaning to bodice ripper!)

Re news media and women....you tell me these gals were not selected for anything but their brains...from fox news...says more about Roger Ailes than anything else.

The ratings war between our local news stations now have "mirror image" traffic girls with their long brown hair, buxom figures and tight fitting outfits trotting around in front of the traffic maps.

I have noticed the Newscasters on our local Boston stations are really poured into their outfits lately. I can't stand watching them.

Add me to the list who wouldn't wear sleeveless this time of year. Brrrrrr!

The sleeveless thing has been around longer than we realize. I peg it back to Courtney Cox on Friends and the white sleeveless blouse she wore in the intro while the theme song played - where they were splashing around a water fountain. And that was on from 994 to 2004. The odd thing about seeing sleeveless women on TV is that the men generally have multiple layers of clothing on.

As for Fox News, I don't know where they find those women, but none of them come across as dumb.

I have noticed this over the years also. I also noticed that little girls Xmas dresses are all sleeveless also. I don't get it.

graywings writes "As for Fox News, I don't know where they find those women, but none of them come across as dumb."

While not at all a fan or viewer of the Fox circus, I've made a point of watching all news outlets' coverage, particularly during the election season just to get a complete picture of what was being broadcast.

Sadly, I have to disagree about the intelligence or perhaps "on aire performance" of the crop of Fox women. Quite a few of the pictured "anchors" struck me as quite the opposite of smart, JMHO.

#6 looks to be Gretchen Carlson, whose bio says she was the high school valedictorian, Stanford graduate, studied at Oxford. I probably don't agree with her politically, but "dumb blond" doesn't apply, IMO.

I'm guessing #2 is Alisyn Camerota

I'm trying to figure out who's who. #3 and #5 look like the same person.

I am delighted to say I don't know who ONE of those fox women are.

Michelle looks great in sleeveless dresses. If I had her arms I would wear sleeveless dresses too...year round.

I like Gayle (a morning personality) but she needs to wear sleeves.

I agree re: the wedding dresses. Hard to understand not wanting to find a dress that is the most flattering for your body type.

    Won't catch me sleeveless.

That has always driven me crazy! You go to an event in the dead of winter and the men are in suits, or at least slacks and a sports coat, but the ladies are in sleeveless mini dresses, strappy heels, and bare legs! I will be so glad when sleeves are back in fashion.

I only recognize them because I am a Jon Stewart/Daily Show fan. ;)

I love 'The Daily Show'. Record and watch daily. Do you like Rachael Maddow? I think she is brilliant. No sleeveless dresses for her!

I record the Daily Show and watch it in the morning while hula hooping!
