There are a lot of stencils on ebay all the time. They even have them already set up to spell out certain sayings for signs.

You can also do the lettering yourself. I do my stuff all freehand with a paintbrush but I have been doing it for a few years now. I know some people can't get it to turn out right. They make paint markers that could help out a lot. Or if you're going for black lettering, use a Sharpie. I look at different Fonts on-line for ideas. You can also open up like Word and type up what you want to say and try looking at it in different fonts. Then I just look at how they drew each letter and do that in pencil before going over it with paint.
