Overall Design Dimension Detail

Hi all, long time lurker here.

Beginning to get serious about a new house design. I am sure we will get with an architect down the road but we are trying to hash out our own ideas first.

A question about house dimensions - I am thinking about the overall exterior dimensions for the framed house.

It seems I read somewhere that for most efficient use of material, a house should be designed around a periodicity of 16", 24", or 48". This would provide the best use of studs, plywood, drywall, etc.

Questions:

1) Is this concept true?

2) If so, should these be outside-outside of wall dimensions that are on a certain 'grid'?

3) Am I over thinking this whole concept?

thanks in advance.
