Fridge water filter replacement

I've had my 36" Liebherr CS2062 for about 11 months now, and the status panel has been suggesting changing the water filter since about six months.

There's no water dispenser on this fridge, so the water filter is solely for the icemaker. We don't use that much ice; I estimate it's made about 6 bins of ice over the past year, of which two bin were just throwing out old ice which slowly melts into an unusable heap.

By my estimate that can't be more than 15 gallons of water that's gone through the filter. I assume the fridge is calculating purely by time and not by measuring filter resistance or clogging. I'm all for filtering impurities from my ice and water, but should I change it as the fridge recommends, or base it manually on how much water has filtered through? Do carbon filters go "stale" after a time?

I haven't priced out the filters, but I think the only place to get them is probably back at the high-end appliance store, so likely not inexpensive at all to change twice a year.

I'm not familiar with your particular frig but I made the mistake of not changing the filter on my GE Monogram because we never used the dispenser and rarely used the ice. I then had the water supply for the ice maker blow off the back of the freezer ruining my hardwood floor in the process. The repair guy showed me the build up of ice inside the freezer where the water supply came in. He said it was due do low water pressure. Then he asked me if I had changed the filter lately. It had not been changed in 18 months, supposed to have been changed at least once per year. I changed the filter and have had no problems though I check the freezer regularly for ice build-up. So being frugal with filters could be costly.

I have a miele fridge. The replacement of the water filter is calculated purely by time, and must take into account a variety of water qualities.
