DD's surgery...

All is well. She went in this AM . The Dr was more than happy to answer questions and to have me stay. I told her I am an RN and she was very receptive to all queries. She is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and also teaches at Emory U in Atlanta. I was very impressed.

The cancer was basal cell and took 2 tries to get it all and have perfectly clear margins. It was the MOHS procedure. It was .7 X .9 cm so about a 1/4 " circle. It was down to the fatty layer of tissue in depth. It took quite a few stitches to close but all are dissolving so no return . Will take one year for the scar to stop being red due to DD's fair skin color. The surgeon will perform any f/u to make it as "pretty " as possible.

DD did great and was very stoic at the initial injection to numb the area....I am sure it hurt like the devil. All else was painless . She will keep it dressed per inst. for a week. She is staying home from work till Monday at her bosses insistence...she has fabulous folks at her company.

I just wanted to f/u and let everyone know that she will be fine. I thank you all for your great support and info when I first posted. c

Did not see this earlier. So glad all is well,!!!!! Scary when our kids...no matter how big...go through health ordeals.

Glad all is well Trail! For some reason I did not realize you are an RN! Also, Emory has an excellent reputation, so that would have made me feel better. Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.

Glad to see it went well; I was going to bump your post today to see how she's doing.

Good to hear all is well. Lasers can do a great job in getting rid of scars if needed.

    Yay!! Sounds like great news!

So glad it went well. I must have missed your earlier post about your DD needing the surgery. No matter our kids' ages, when they face difficult things, especially in health matters, it is very worrisome.

My DM tells me it never ends. When your children are grown, you still worry. When/if they marry, then you have another "child" to worry over, and if there are then grandchildren, well then it is worry x3.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your DD. I am sure having mom being an RN made her feel much more confident about the procedure.

Oh shoot, for some reason I kept thinking it was to be on the 18th, but that's Saturday, so should have realized I was thinking of the wrong date!

Glad it went well. Sorry she had to go through that at all, and that they had to go fairly deep. I'm sure it will be uncomfortable for her tonight and tomorrow when the numbness wears off so make sure she takes it easy and takes something for the pain if she needs to. Good thing she has her mommy there to take good care of her!

I'm happy it all went well. As I mentioned, I've had two Mohs procedures and scars are all but invisible. Glad hers is over!

Such good news! You really must feel you can finally breathe again. Thanks for letting us know. Hugs to you and DD!

THANKYOU ! We are all relieved that the dx/procedure/prognosis all are positive. The comments here went a long way toward easing my mind. I just talked to her and she said the Aleve worked pretty well. She has Tylenol with codeine but she is hesitant to take it as she feels sick sometimes from that. There was nothing else that the MD was willing to prescribe unless Maddie calls her tonight and says the codeine made her sick...she is very conservative about pain meds , as are many MD's now. I have been in 2 MD offices recently that had notices saying they prescribe NO pain meds at all...none for any problem. That is a first.

I appreciate all the kind words. I held her ankle all during the procedure and then sat with her while we waited to hear. She is a very strong gal, my DD ...I am so proud of her. There is nothing like having your Mom by your side. c

p.s....work in progress...my DH had someone tell him a while back...you are only as happy as your unhappiest child...unfortunately that is very often true.

Thanks for update, I am sure you are relieved it is over with positive news. Wishing your DD a speedy recovery.

    Great news!

"you are only as happy as your unhappiest child"

Oh, truer words were never spoken!

Update...she had a bad night and was in a lot of pain. Didn't feel hungry so she didn't take and Tyl/cod...wish she had called me again. Anyway she took 1/4 of one this AM and had immediate relief so she was going to cont taking small amounts so she could get her work done at home. Thank goodness her job can be done completely from home. She is a broker for an IT company. She was upset when she took off the dressing. The original 1/4 in circle morphed into a 2" long incision so that they could get enough slack in the skin to close the wound. It will just take time I am sure .

Thanks again for all the wonderfully supportive and informative comments and the good wishes . c

    Trail...

Although I didn't reply to your earlier query, I had a squamous lesion on the bridge of my nose removed this past summer. Just as your daughter had, the excision turned out to be about the size of a nickel, so that the wound could be properly closed. I still have redness because I'm also fair, but just wanted to remind you and your daughter that as soon as it's healed and she can uncover the wound, she needs to keep some sort of sunblock on there. Initially I used a clear zinc ointment while the skin was still very red; now I use sunblock appropriate for the season - right now I'm using a 15 - I live in NJ and the sun is not very strong at this time, in March I'll switch to my 45.

Thank you Helene...she knew to wear sunblock but not specifically on that spot starting right away. You know how strong the sun is in Atlanta !! I am glad you told us this as I don't think they told her. Her makeup has a high block number so that will be good.

The big concern is her glasses. She wears them to read and they said they can't touch the scar at all so we don't know what we are going to do about that. Maybe contacts..she has always wanted them. Thank you again...great info abounds on this forum ! c

    Trail,

I wear glasses, too, so I got creative and when I was able to reduce the size of the bandage before the stitches were removed I cut up 2 clear - not sheer- bandaids which allowed me to put my glasses on without pain and also kept the sun off the wound. I had my MOHs done in late July and kept the bandage on until early september. Even after I removed the bandaids the area was somewhat tender but tolerable.

My doctor offered laser to soften the scar and reduce its appearance, so I had that done in late September. I needed a bandaid for about a day or 2 after that.

    Trail, that's great!!

Work, yes, the worry never ever goes away as our children age.

A perfect example is the little children's book, "Love You Forever." I bought it 20 years ago and it's still a best seller. I bought the hardback for my DS when he became a first time parent.

Helene I will tell her this AM. I wondered if the bandaid would be OK with the glasses pressing on it so now you have relieved my mind. Is your area pain free now ? I know it will be sensitive for quite awhile and she is very conscientious about things so I think this will be a good solution for her. Thank you again.

Oak...I bought that book for my new grandson too ! It is wonderful. c

There's nothing better than having a mamma who will kiss your boo-boos away - even when your 40!

Good job Trail and wishing your daughter well.

    Trail,

I have no pain in the area, but if I bend over, I get a slight pressure -almost ticklish type feeling in the area.

My husband had the same surgery 10 years ago and it also took two times to get everything. He has been cancer free ever since and his scar is not noticeable. So glad it is all overwith for your daughter. So glad you were able to be with her!

This is wonderful news, C! I'm so glad they caught her lesion early . . . and, being on her face, that she had it taken off by a plastic surgeon. I scrubbed for a plastic surgeon in Florida for 2 years and I strongly second Helene's advice to use a good, high number sunblock on any new scar for at least several months, if not longer. How reassuring it must have been for your DD to have you there. And, conversely, what a great mom you are to have been there for her! Hope she's feeling back to normal soon.

Thank you for more info and well wishes. An update. She is still wearing a more padded dressing as she was directed to do. She says that even with the extra padding her glasses really hurt the scar and give her a headache. So I don't know exactly what she is going to do. I know it is early days but it could be that she is going to have to get contacts. We can't have her so uncomfortable and she has to have her glasses for the computer etc at work.

Anyone have any other suggestions ? I sure would welcome them. Thank you so for all the support. c

I am so glad she is OK, but sad for her pain!

Does she not like contacts or is it a hassle to go get them now?

So true: "you are only as happy as your unhappiest child." I never thought of that.

Oak, I love that book! My 6 y.o. says it's too sad.

She is fine now...has been one week today since surgery and she said glasses with padding under nose piece no longer hurts. I am glad for that. She likes the freedom of her glasses...used to want contacts years ago but no longer.

Thanks for all the good thoughts...she is a strong lady..wish I was 1/2 as wonderful as she is :) c
