jennlynn, you should get a machine w/at least 5x7 hoop..you will find many uses for it. For instance almost all ITH projects will use the 5x7. I do a lot of these--the purses, mug rugs, etc. If you only want to put a design on a shirt pocket-then 4x4--but I guarantee you will soon wish you had larger hoops. And unless you want to buy software (expensive) for digitizing your own designs, then you should def get a machine that will connect to computer, or have a port for flash drive. You might get a better buy with a used machine from your local dealer--it will be serviced & come with a warranty, in most cases, and even classes will be available. For me, the Brother is favorite..I have 2 of them!! Good luck with your new adventure.
