Fiasco in the making

So my BIL is getting married in August. The ink wasn't even dry on his divorce papers when his ex announced her engagement. A few days later HE announced HIS engagement, to a woman he'd only met a few weeks earlier.

We've met the new fiancee, and she's not a weirdo like his ex, but she's not exactly got it all together...as she explained about getting married so soon after meeting "we'll get to know one another after we're married". She's got 4 young kids who live with her ex.

On to the potential fiasco...my husband is to be the best man. This is BIL's 3rd marriage. He lives several hundred miles away from us and his mom. The wedding is to take place in August at a campground at a park. Word is that everyone should plan to get their campsite because they already got their alcohol permit and it's going to be a 'par-tay y'all!' This is the BIL who had a problem with Buddha at my house, now he's all about partying it up.

Temps in that area in August hover around 100 degrees, and my husband has been told to come down in 3 weeks for a 'fitting'. We wondered what that entailed and apparently he has to wear Wranglers jeans, cowboy boots, cowboy hat and a duster. None of which he owns and will never, ever wear again. Plus, it's going to be hotter than blazes and the wedding party is planning to be drunk ahead of time. The bride will be barefoot and the theme is cowboys and indians.

MIL, who is not known for her tact, told BIL "what's the big deal, this is your 3rd wedding, why are you going all out?" I kind of chuckled at that, and recalled that I was at his 2nd wedding, where my husband was also the best man. I think he was best man at his first, too, come to think of it! That wedding was an eye opener, the bride at the time had 5 kids and was pregnant with the 6th, and she came out dressed in a voluminous white gown with the veil over her face. The officiant was a 98 year old retired pastor who couldn't remember their names. I was the only person who was dressed up...everyone else (except the bride) was in jeans & t-shirts. DH wore jeans & a flannel, as did the groom.

And it just gets better...the officiant will be their uncle, a man who currently owes us a couple thousand dollars on a business deal he ripped us off on and who is ignoring our attempts to collect.

Needless to say, I'm not going to be available for this event. I think I'm just going to stay home in my air conditioned house and lauuuuuggggghhhhhh.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. If I were your husband, I think I would have to be busy that weekend so he could stay home with you in the A/C.

Pesky you need to write a book. Seriously. You roll from one, um, interesting situation to another. No one could make this stuff up! How do you keep your sanity???

I agree that this is a fiasco in the making. Fortunately it's not your fiasco.

It sounds like these people are pretty immature. They are more interested in a wedding PAR-TAY, than a marriage.

Oh Pesky, what in the world are you doing hanging around this crowd? Yep. I'll say it. LOSERS!!

You have far too much class for these people.

Quick, get a call in to someone in Hollywood -I'm sure there is still time to get in on a reality show and have the whole thing paid for!!!!

Chuckling at all this. Yes, I agree, Goldie...I DO have far too much class for those yahoos. H is reticent to go, he's trying to come up with excuses not to do it, but he'll likely cave.

The fiancee just posted on FB that she's looking for someone to help donate 'decore' or if anyone is willing to lend their decorating help. Giant HINTHINTHINT that I'm ignoring.

I honestly believe that I was cursed at one point, with that curse 'may you live an interesting life'. I swear, if someone can top half the garbage I have to go thru on a daily basis, I'd be more than willing to give up the crown!

All I can say is that I'm thankful my son is free, my kids are doing ok, my marriage, well...it's still in limbo, but we are working on things. I take life day-to-day right now and so far I'm still happy. I just have to laugh at these yahoos.

How is the wound that your DH was having so much trouble with ? That thread has moved on down and I was concerned about his recovery/diagnosis. c

Pesky, I understand now how come you are so resilient and strong, you could indeed write a novel about some of the parts of your life.

Having your son free and the kids doing ok are the major things to be grateful for, you sure are right about that, and I'm glad for you .

You MUST go because then you can come back and tell us all about it.

I think I'd go just for the comic relief. lol

Wow. Yep a fiasco. Thank goodness for extended families...huh? At least they can provide us with a laugh and you as well. You just can't make this stuff up.
I would gift them with a buddha. :)

Yep pesky, you should write a novel! Kudos for you in keeping your sanity through all of the escapades.

I heard on the radio yesterday...You're not really married unless there is a fistfight, a guest has a meltdown and someone is falling down drunk at your wedding.

    Hope the wedding is fiascoless!

Take a video camera, if it's a fiasco, post it on youtube, make a fortune, laugh all the way to the bank.

OMG, this sounds like it could be on one of those low-life reality shows, Pesky! I'm sorry that you're having to go though it but applaud your decision to stay home for the actual event . . . but then again, maybe you can go and film it all and SELL it to a reality show (LOL!).

I have no stamina for drama or fiasco. I run as fast as possible from people with this mentality as I worry they are contagious. Poor choices always seem to breed more poor choices. I find it too exhausting and distracting to be around people like this.

Forget the book and the movie. (Channeling Forest Gump's friend,) Run, Pesky, run!!

You've got a tube top, Daisy Duke's and platform heels, right? Then you're set to go! ;-) Maybe add some large feather earrings?

And what's with the dusters in 100 degree weather?

Oh, Pesky don't you want to go and see the "decore?" You are a wise woman to stay home in the a/c. Thanks for the laughs!

This seldom happens but I am utterly speechless.

You are all cracking me up. Wanna hear another in-law story? Now, bear in mind these are people that my husband never sees, except for funerals (and the occasional wedding).

We had gone to see his Grandmother on her death bed. I loved the crazy old gal, she was a real hoot and just so sad that she'd had 10 pretty much worthless children. She loved to talk with me because I was the only one who would listen to her and she used to tell me "I talked so pretty." In any event, we went to pay our last visit and we were at DH's 'richest' Aunt's home. She was a widow who had been married to a man who'd owned a junk yard. Since I'd heard all about how 'rich' Aunt B was, I was utterly unprepared for what I saw as we drove up.

She lived in a rural area and as we drove down the dirt road, we passed lots of junk cars and a sign on another driveway that read 'Tresspassers will be shot'. As we continued down this rutted, poison oak choked road, we passed more and more junk, rusted appliances, farm equipment, unknown pieces of metal & wood. Finally we pull up in the dooryard and I see a run down double wide mobile.

The door has a towel for a curtain.

But there was Aunt B's Corvette parked out front.

We enter and it was like walking into the Dollar Tree at a fire sale. Those optic lights and lava lamps are glowing. Dozens and dozens of dolls are lined up and sitting around. Feathered flower arrangements and neon 'silk' flowers abound. Window treatments consist of blankets. (In their defense, they were covering the windows to darken the room for Grandma, who was lying in a hospital bed in the front room). The sofas were that orange & rust colored floral patterned crushed velour faux colonial/early American style. Covered with rainbow colored granny square crochet afghans.

Most of the nephews or grandsons or whatevers were sitting around a tv playing video games. In the kitchen were the women, cooking up something.

I ventured out to the deck to get some fresh air and someone comes walking out with a bowl and offers me some cantalope and gravy. Yeah, cantalope with sausage gravy over it. I threw up a little in my mouth. A couple of people are standing around eating that concotion.

Then they started talking about how one time Granpa made squirrel dumplings and going on about eating squirrel meat and I just lost it. I went inside, sat next to Grandma, held her hand and whispered to her that I loved her and to just let go. We left shortly after that, and she'd passed by the time we got home that night.

I STILL have nightmares of that visit. I swear I could hear dueling banjos.

This just gets funnier and funnier. It's true...no one could make this up. OMG!! What a colorful life you have! And a sense of humor to get you through the tough times. I thought I could eat gravy on just about anything...I'll never look at a bowl of cantaloupe quite the same way ever again.

Pesky, if that was the "richest" aunt/grandmother, then I can safely say you and DH are extremely wealthy! lol. Hey, did she leave any money? lol.

I bet we all have funny in-law stories. I'll never forget my SIL saying outloud she wanted a piece of furniture when our MIL lay dead in the next room!

Oh, don't go to the wedding. The alcohol thing is what scares me. And why would your DH have to go out there to be fitted for jeans? lol

OMG, this is the funniest thread ever! Pesky, you poor thing, you go through so much!!! Whats u gonna send for a weddin present??? Just wait until they want to come visit, haha!

You must really love your husband.

The sofas were that orange & rust colored floral patterned crushed velour faux colonial/early American style.

My ex in laws inherited that same type of sofa and loveseat. When my ex and I got married they took the opportunity to get rid of it and gave it to us. I think that one reason I divorced him was to get away from that hideous, yet indestructible furniture!

I know the intent wasn't to make everyone crack up, but thanks for the chuckle. Your family makes ours seem downright normal ;o)
