Dixie Carter dies. :(

It was on my AOL newspage that she passed away yesterday. But the wording was kind of curious because the family wouldn't say how she died, only to give them privacy during this "tragedy."

How sad, what a great actress on the best TV show ever, and a voice like an angel!

Here's the quote Hal Holbrook gave.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family ... We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

It doesn't sound good, does it? Did anyone hear her sing "How Great Thou Art" on Designing women?

I enjoyed watching her; I thought she was a good actress.

The last time I saw a picture of her some months back I hardly recognized her; she was so very thin and didn't look very healthy.

I'm just going to put it out there, this sounds like suicide doesn't it? How tragic an devastiating for the family.

I saw the tapeing of the last show of Designing Women, when I went out to California for a visit. It took forever waiting in line, never knowing if you would get in or not.
I was much younger than and if I knew it was going to take five hours to tape the show, I wouldn't of waited. We left before it was over.

I really liked Dixie Carter's acting and was a real fan of Designing Women.

I just found several links explaining that due to an extended recuperation time from surgery, that Ms carter would not be able to perform in a Broadway show as had been planned. These comments were made around the 24th of March.

So, possibly an illness or plastic surgery results gone bad.

Who knows? It's the family's decision to keep the details private.
    Still, it's sad.

I was saddened to hear of her death. She had quite the screen presence on Designing Women.

My local news reported it this morning and the newscaster used this surprising but refreshing phrase, "She was just 70 years old."

Newdawn, I was thinking the same thing. And if she died of a complication from plastic surgery then I can see why the family would try to keep it under wraps.

I also noticed how thin she had become and am wondering if she had an eating disorder?

I was at the Mayo Clinic last month for my annual checkup. While waiting the first morning for the Clinic doors to open, I sat in the lobby of the hotel across the street, chatting with the doorman.

He mentioned that Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter were regulars at Mayo and that hotel, for checkups and whatever. In speaking with this guy, I had the distinct feeling that they had been there very recently.

    May she rest in peace.

A friend of mine told me that it had been Hal who was ill.

He was so precious on Designing Women. I loved it when he told "Julia" she was sexy in her "jammies."

I haven't seen the show in syndication, have any of you?

I loved that show! Lifetime carried reruns late night for years.

The NY Times is reporting that she died from complications of endometrial cancer. My first thought when I heard her age was that she was "only" 70 also... I'll bet Hal Holbrook never expected to survive her. :'( So sad, she was a great.

Never would I associate the word suicide with Dixie Carter. From what I have heard and read of her (she is from Tennessee and still had a home here), I think she is probably very much like her character from DW. A stong woman who held tight to her southern roots.

I'm so glad there are *celebrities* who embrace privacy rather than thinking everything is fodder for the press. Not a bit surprised that her family would choose to grieve in private.

Cancer was my first thought, I had heard she was ill, and it seems almost daily that we hear of another stricken by that awful disease.

    Rest in Peace Dixie . . .

I just read it was from complications of endometrial cancer. Not sure if I spelled that right. So I guess the death was sudden and not expected.

Someone mentioned Dixie on his gardening blog. Loved his comment and it made me remember one of my favorite Julia rants.

Designing women is my all time favorite sitcom and I have used many quotes from it over the years. But no one delivered them such as Dixie Carter. I will sure miss her.

I loved her in Designing Women, and have always appreciated Hal Holbrook. Thank goodness she is at peace, and suffering no longer, but she is gone too soon.
