engineered flooring needs reshined HOW?

GIve a moose a muffin wood floor story: Sorry so long but it is the tale - fix it yourself, and if it isn't broke don't fix it. After 29 years of marriage and always doing it ourselves without problems we hired a local floor contractor to reglue our parquet dining room-what were we thinking.??? THe guy popped up the entired 200 sq/ ft.,uncovered a lovely oak floor (80yrs old), - the next part we are still shaking our heads over- convinced us that he could uncover the kitchen-attached to dining and refinish the entire area into a "sea of golden oak"- not only was the kitchen not oak, the guy talked a great talk but did not know how to do wood of any kind especially floors, we ended with a "finished" floor that snagged your socks when you walk across, is ugly, dust over all the 2700 sq/ft of house, even clothes in closets need cleaned-A HUGE MESS> We finally said LEAVE.

We made it into the city on sat., actually found the engineered oak that is in our connecting family room, and are in the process of installing, thank heavens our Sr. hi sc son is still home-what a help!!!. THe floor is going to look great, but the 15 yr old family room really looks dull next to this new floor

How can I shine it up?? Sorry so long, and appreciate advice-If have used this site many times over the years for advice _PRIOR to starting a project-never that the end of one. Shake me back to reality!!!
