Hardwood floor for art studio?

I'd appreciate any input from members. We are finishing the attic in our 1908 house. It is a great room with pitched high ceilings and we've added skylights. I'd like a really durable floor since I'll be doing art projects but also one consistent with the age and character of the house. The sunporch in the house has a painted fir floor so that was my first choice. The bid for a painted fir floor came in higher than for a finished oak. Is there some other form of wood I could use? It's going to be painted so basically I just need wood to paint. Thanks,

Leni
