cottage style platform bed

I'm looking for a queen size platform bed for a cottage style bedroom. I'm thinking a metal bed, but would also consider white painted wood. The bed needs to be sturdy and well-made as it will be used regularly and I want it to last for a long time. Suggestions for beds/sources or tips on how to determine quality much appreciated!

Thanks,

Catherine

Catherine, I wish I could help but I will not have time to look again until after tax season. So far I love the Ethan Allan Sleigh Bed in the Cotton color in their American Country collection. I also love the look of the antique white bed at Levitts but the quality is not there so I passed on that one. Bassetts and Stanley's both have nice platform beds also. I was really hoping to find a pretty antique white platform bed with a pretty headboard and a low footboard that does not require a boxspring. I really want a low bed since I am very petite and do not like to have to hop onto my bed and jump off of it. But all these beds require a platform bed. I also was hoping for solid wood and not veneered but I can't seem to find that either. But all of the beds mentioned (except for Levitts which by the way is very nice also if particle board does not create allergies for you since it is so stylish and I love the color and it looks very sealed until you look underneath)are sealed very well and look very well made and are pretty and very county like.

I also love the metal beds but wonder if they will be cold to the touch which I would not like. I also want to be able to lean on the bed's headboard to watch TV.

    Hi lynn2006,

Good luck with tax season--almost over! If you find anything I'd love to hear about it. I'll have to check out Ethan Allan, hadn't thought to look there.

I'm not sure if this is similar to what you are looking for or not, we are considering furniture from this comapny (Durham) for our bedroom and also my son's room. Solid wood, made in Canada.

This is what they call a "plantation bed" from their Royal Cottage collection:

That's a pretty bed. And I like that it is made in Canada! Thanks so much.

Thank you Laura I like the Durham bed and it says it is solid wood. I wonder if they could just sell the headboard and the frame without the footboard? I like very low footboards since there will be a bureau in front of the bed with not a lot of room to walk.

I love the Pottery Barn set that reminds me of the Levitz Antique White Distressed set. Both are my taste and what I like but both have veneers with particle board that I am allergic to.

One more day of doing sales tax returns now, then I can look at the platform beds to make a decision to order the Flobed in 100% natural latex with or without the solid wood box spring and/or with or without the metal solid bed. Hence, I need to know if I am buying a platform bed that still needs a box spring or one that does not or a Metal frame.

My platform bed fell apart and it was thrown out during tax season along with the bed (A bed store took that away when I ordered a bed from them that had Urethane topping on it that gassed off and caused me to be sick .... they took that away and refunded my money but now I have no bed at all.. more comfortable sleeping on the floor than my old bed that needed to be replaced so I am no longer upset). I am sleeping on a 1% natural latex queen size pad over an exercise made on the floor and need to decide soon. :) So this was a perfect post by the first poster for me also. My back no longer hurts but I hate being so low on the floor. :)

I always had golden oak furniture all my life and now 45 year later, I want I think antique white to brighten my room or I could fall in love with a cherry color.

I am now thinking that a metal headboard only would take up less room in my bedroom and look nice with the antique white furniture I plan to buy. I love the white solid wood beds but my bedroom is only 11.5 X 12 square feet and I want more than one piece of furniture besides end tables.

Anyone finished their cottage style bedroom yet and care to share?

    Hi Lynn,

We just purchased a metal bed for the guest room and I love it. When dh was sick for about a week, I slept in that room (as a teacher, I can't afford to get sick!) and had no problem propping myself up against the headboard in order to read. Here's a pic of the bed from the Orvis website. We bought ours from a local furniture store, but they didn't have a pic of it on their website. :)

Organic, Thank you so much for the link to the very nice metal bed. I like it a lot.

Today, I finally went shopping again after my busy tax season to look at beds and mattresses and furniture. I bought nothing since I wanted to come home to measure the space I have. One wall is just windows with heating vents and a balcony door in between so I can not put any furniture there. The other wall across from my bed has a door so it has that much less room. Then the other wall that is not behind the bed (across from the wall of windows) has hardly any wall since there is a hallway between two skinny walls that lead to closets on each side of the hallway that leads to the Master Bathroom. It is a pretty bedroom but lacks real wall space for furniture.

I feel the bed you showed me would look very nice, was not too pricey and will not take up so much room so I will have room for a night stand on one side of my bed and a Bachelor chest on the other side to have some drawer space. Then I really only have room for a piece of furniture in front of my bed and then maybe I can fit a small TV stand to hold my TV by slanting it on a diagonal with my window so it will not be on top of the heater vent. I wanted a pretty armoire but I see now that I have no room for it to fit unless I get that instead of a bureau in front of my bed.

At least I should get a bed and mattress for now. :)

I love the style of the bed you shared. Thank you so much.

I also have to look up that mattress set you bought again since I know I want a Latex Bed. I will do a search on the decorating site for that discussion we had on mattresses when I was so busy with tax season.

I tried out a few Latex beds at Bassett's today (they had a Carrington Chase Ivy Ridge Latex bed and they are comfortable like my Natural Latex Pad I am sleeping on right now on the floor. I also am thinking of the Flobed also but I remember you loving your Latex mattress so I will look up that again also.

I really have to decide this week on my bed and bed frame since I can't stand sleeping on the floor anymore but had to for these last two months so I would get work done and not just buy anything that I would not like or be allergic to.

Thank you again for your help! I still love my stainless steel refrigerator that you were a big help in me buying. You are such a caring person.

Lynn: Sleeping on the floor?!?!? You poor dear!!!

The brand name of the bed we bought is "Nature's Rest." We are still extremely happy with it: no more backaches in the morning! I believe we purchased the medium-firm option.

I really love the metal bed, too. It's very sturdy and not too big at all (and it's in a very small bedroom in our house). I'd love to purchase just the headboard for our bedroom and might just do it. Although I'm a little concerned that it might look weird have the same bed in both bedrooms. :)

Glad to hear you still love your refrigerator!

    Thanks for your kind comments.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will have to check out the LLBean bed--is it a platform? For some reason I thought I remembered their Rangley bed as platform, but not the metal. It is pretty and a great price.

And I really like some of the Pottery Barn beds, but I'm just not sure about the quality for the price, you know? I'm actually thinking about having one made for us if I go with wood. Plus then I'd be sure it was fair trade--a big bonus for me.

I really appreciate all the suggestions. And Lynn, good luck getting off the floor soon!

Organic, Why do you want to purchase the beautiful bed frame without the footboard? I am thinking of also purchasing it without the footboard in the Butter Pecan color that I found on another site for the same style. I ove the footboard but I wonder if it will look crowded with a bureau in front of it. Would it be sturdy also without a footboard?

Catherine, I love the pottery barn bed and furniture in teh antique white but it is veneered over particle boards and solids. I can't have particle board.

Hi Lynn. We can't have a footboard, because there's a bench at the end of the bed for the pups to use in assisting them onto the bed. :)

    Organic,

If I had the room, a bench to help my little doggies get on the bed would be wonderful also. It seems that the price for the headboard and buying a frame is not that much different than getting a complete bed. I wonder if I bought the footboard, would my little doggies get their heads stuck or hurt themselves or would it be in the way. It does not look like it takes up too much room. The price is very good and it is pretty. There is only 1.5 feet in front of the end of the bed where I must stand to open the drawers to my triple dresser that will be in front of the bed. I sure wish my bedroom was a foot longer.

Do you think the Butter Pecan color will look nice with Antique White furniture? I Like the darker color better but I am not sure how it would look in my bedroom with the light furniture I am getting so I am thinking I want to keep every thing light.

    Lynn,

Good question about the possible injury to pups. I don't have an answer to that. If there is only 1.5 feet in front of the end of the bed, however, I think I'd opt out of the footboard: it might look a little cramped. Unless you can somehow rearrange the room to give you more space at the end of the bed???

Do you have a pic of the bed you're considering, in the Butter Pecan color? And a pic of your other bedroom furniture?

Organic, I have decided against the Butter Pecan Finish Fenton headboard since the color was not a good match for my furniture.

I am now thinking of going with a Rustic Ivory color in the Wesley Allan Maywood or Montgomery style headboard only. I is taking me so long to make a decision.

My FloBeds.com bed arrived today and I can't wait to have someone help me put it together. It was expensive but with my allergies and the problems I had with a previous bed order during my tax season, I knew I needed a 100% natural latex bed.

I ordered my Stanley Cottage Revival furniture today and due to the lack of space in my room for a footboard, I decided (despite loving the way a cottage bed looks and loving that Durham Bed so much) to go with a Iron Headbord and a little matching accent table on the right of my bed since I had no room for a real night stand.

Catherine, What have you decided for you room?

    Hi Lynn,
I haven't decided yet. I tend to start researching way before decision time so I probably won't pick anything for another month or two. I hope you are happy with your Stanley furniture and iron headboard!
