Floor experts- Question about subfloor

I am trying to decide whether to replace my kitchen subfloor with 3/8" or 1/2" plywood. I pryed up the old subfloor because it had black adhesive, old tile and vinyl on it. Under the old subfloor are diagonal 1x6 boards. I need to replace the plywood(the old plywood subfloor was 5/8" thick). The 1x6 diagonal floor will remain. I have decided on a floating laminate floor. My kitchen will connect to a dining room with existing hardwood. The 3/8" plywood with the laminate on top makes a nice transition (almost perfectly even) with the existing hardwood. The 1/2" is sturdier, but creates a higher floor with the laminate. I know there are trim kits with laminates to accomodate differences in floor height. After all this explaining, my question is... Is 3/8" plywood sufficient for a subfloor? Or should I go with the 1/2"? (Remember, there's a 1" thick floor that this is going on top of.)
