Bottles

I'm going to be bottle feeding. I originally wanted to buy Dr. Brown's 8 oz. wide bottles. They come with the wide style nipples. I really like the short height and wanted the larger ones so I don't have to buy larger (talking about ounces) later.

Someone bought me a three pack of the 4 oz. standard bottles. Someone else bought me a single 8 oz. standard with a pack of the stage two (of course standard) nipples.

I have a 4 oz. Avent bottle I received for free. The nipple is the wide kind vs. standard.

So to sum that up quick I have 5 bottles total...

(4) bottles with standard nipple - (3) 4oz., (1) 8oz.

(1) bottle with wide nipple - 4oz.

What do you think I should do about more bottles? Thoughts on what kind and how many? I keep hearing how sometimes babies may not like a certain bottle and you might have to keep trying different kinds.

I originally had planned on having at least 6 bottles (8 oz. wide neck) but that seems silly to buy a different style if I have 4 of the standard ones. I don't really want to be heading out to the store to buy bottles after the baby's born if we don't have to.

I have a relative that works at the hospital and I've been meaning to ask her what types of bottles/nipples they use. Sounds like it just depends on the baby so that may not matter in the end.

Shee, I would use what you have to see what you like and then once you know, make do and place an order online if you do not want to go to the store.

DD2 nursed in the beginning, but had to supplement with formula. She used the Dr Brown regular nipple/bottles. She and I both have wide bottles at our homes, but the baby - now 9 months old - have never liked them. At all.

So I would suggest waiting until you see what your baby likes before buying more.

imo, the wide bottles are too wide for small babies, small mouths.

The nipples changes as baby grows. If you keep using the Dr Brown, I would buy a few packs of the next 2 nipples so you'll have them when baby is ready for them.

Geez, I have no idea why I didn't even think of just waiting as an option. I'm going with 'baby brain'. I'll wait and see how it goes and take it from there.

Allison - The wide and standard nipples aren't interchangeable on the bottle though, right?

DS and DIL struggled with bottles until they settled on the Avent. She started out trying to breast feed and had to swith to bottles and really were not prepared. DGD weighed over 10lbs and was a hard sucker so the nipples were either too slow or too fast. This created some very STRESSFUL moments for parents and babe!

They used the small Avents (I think they are around 5 oz - not sure) until she was weaned. Nipples come in hole sizes based on age (newborn, 3 mos, 6 mos, etc). We LOVED those bottles, never leaked, nice shape for little hands when they get older.

In fact, all young mothers in my family have used the Avents in the past few years and have loved them.

Have heard good things about the Dr. Brown's also. I would pick one and try to stay with it (baby may change your mind)so they don't get confused. Good bottles and nipples are a bit pricey, but you really don't need too many if you have time to keep them washed.

How's the nursery coming along? Not rushing - just nosey :).

Tuesday - My SIL used Avents and really liked them. I liked the size which was why I was thinking the wide Dr. Brown's would be good. Believe it or not, not long after I posted this, someone else bought me another three pack of the standard bottles in the 8 oz. size. Here's to hoping they work just ducky. :)

There's really not much left to do in the nursery but the last little bit seems to be taking an eternity.

    Things left:
-Add decorative hangers to the pictures on the wall.
    -Install ceiling fan.
    -Glue baseballs to the bookends.
-The lady that hems my clothing is making changing pad covers for me. I'll follow up with her Monday if I don't hear back from her by then.
-The dresser top...I painted the dresser red and lightly glazed it. We stained the top but it didn't turn out the first time so my dad took the top off and sprayed the stain on. Long story short, the finish accidently got messed up and we had to stain a third time. He should be able to spray the topcoats Friday and get the thing back on.
-I need to attach the new hardware to the dresser but I was waiting for the paint to cure.
-Make one pillow for the rocker.
-Install another shelf in the closet.

All the clothing, blankets, etc. are washed and sorted on the floor waiting to be put away. I feel better knowing we could function just fine if he came early but I'd really like to wrap it all up. It's interesting to me that somewhere along the line while being pregnant I lost the motivation for some things I planned on doing like making the mobile, drawing all the art (only drew one picture), and making tons of pillows and a blanket. :)

Shee after my kids were past the bottle stage, studies came out about the plastics used in baby bottles. I was horrified that I had used them (I breastfed, but supplemented with bottles). I switched to metal sippy cups. Because my kids are older now, I haven't kept up with the changes and maybe there are different materials being used now, but I thought I would mention it. Feel free to ignore if this is something you've already considered.

I have no advice, but just a comment. I never knew there was so many choices in bottles! My kids had tiny little 4oz glass bottles with a standard pointy nipple. Then I found some of these nipples that were shaped like a 3D figure 8 and they liked those. Only moved to bigger bottles when they could hold them themselves.

I don't think I could deal with having a baby today! Oh my gosh...they just had a news segment about baby crib bumpers and pillows, etc. I was telling DH that when I had my first born, we were told to put the baby on her tummy to sleep so if she threw up she wouldn't choke. Now it's put them on their backs. Then it was you didn't dare buy a crib made before 1980 because the slats were too wide, now it's no bumper pads.

I certainly admire your ambition Shee...if you can, get all those little details done before baby comes or else he'll be 15 and you'll still be waiting around to get the book ends finished.

Shee, you are correct - the wide and regular nipples are not interchangeable with the different size bottles.

DaisyChain01, these bottles are all BPA free.

We haven't had any trouble with leaking either, but you don't want to shake/mix with the nipple cover on - as it will get formula in the cover area.

We both have a Dr Brown bottle warmer and like them. I have the microwavable container for cleaning, but her microwave is too small. She uses the microwaveable bags for cleaning and sterilizing.

I'm a NICU PA for 14 years and mother of 3. I used the old fashioned Gerber bottles, that cost about $2 per bottle. I used Dr. Brown's and paid a pretty penny for them with my first after she quit breastfeeding at 6 months. That lasted only 2 months because I hated having to scrub every little crevice and make sure they were bone dry before putting them away b/c they can get mold in all the small holes. Most healthy babies will suck their milk down no matter what. There truly is too much to choose from on the market if you ask me.
In the hospital, we use disposable bottles, with a standard nipple like on the Gerber bottles or in some instances a Nuk nipple for sloppy feeders.
We do occasionally use Dr. Browns for babies with severe reflux because they have a cross cut nipple and we can add rice cereal to the formula to thicken the feed and it's easier for the baby to suck down.

After my DD weened the twins at six months, she use Dr. Browns and loved them. Gee, I remember back in the day when we had to use sterilizers!

I used Dr. Brown's with my DS and loved them! I used the standard size and I don't remember having any problems cleaning them at all. I have fond memories of Dr. Brown bottles...
