tiling question

I have two questions about laying tile in my entryway, which is small--approximately 4' wide by 7' long. I bought small ceramic tiles that are 5/16 inch thick. They are stone look-alikes and I bought some in a lighter color (gold and tan) and most in a darker color (brown and gray). I planned to use the lighter color for a medallion in the center and the darker tiles for the field around the medallion.

When I got home I discovered that the gold and tan tiles are 2-3/8 inches square and the darker tiles are 2-7/16 inches square, so there is a difference of 1/16 inch in the two colors. Can I make this up by varying the width of the grout line? Like spacing the gold and tan tiles with 1/16 inch spacers and the darker tiles with 1/8 inch spacers? Do I need to have wider grout spaces for flooring?

I have laid tile countertops and tabletops before, but never flooring. I do plan to put down mastic, 1/4 inch hardieboard, and more mastic to keep the floor strong. I am putting this over an old wood subfloor, so I thought I might put a layer of tarpaper over the floor, before I put the mastic down. Is this a good idea?

I guess that was more than two questions. Thanks for any advice you can give.
