Carpet recommendations requested

We built this house 20 years ago. They carpet is past it now though a carpet salesman told us he was surprised it was in such (relatively) good shape after that time. It is either dacron or polyester, not wool or nylon.

I need to put it throughout the house, upstairs and down. Only the kitchen, hall and one new family room are hard wood.

We have 2 adults and a dog. None of us are especially good at wiping our feet when we come in. I'd like this carpet to last a long time and look good with weekly vacuuming and yearly professional cleaning.

I am thinking midlevel in price.

Brand and model -

What do you recommend?

Color-

We have a gray now which I like because it is neutral and doesn't show traffic paths . I can't think of anything else that will do as well. Am I overlooking something?

I dread the whole installation process, both boxing up every single book and nick nack and having heavy antique furniture with mirrors, glass fronted hutches and so forth moved. Any tips on that process?

Thanks

I am a big fan of Dupont Sorona Smartstrand carpet. You will find a lot of positive comments on it here on GardenWeb. This fiber is available in a variety of Mohawk carpet styles. From your message, it looks like you will be needing a particularly stain and soil resistant fiber and IMHO Smartstrand is the best. Look for it at your local flooring store and see what you think about it.

Color is a personal preference and there are a variety of styles that cover many different price points.

I just helped my mother with a Smartstrand style and she loves it. My brother stopped by her home and said that he could sleep on the carpet, it felt so good.

Thanks! I will be looking for it at the stores. Is it fairly "crush resistant"?

Nylon has always been the premium man made carpet fiber. I now feel that Smartstrand is better than nylon. Being crush resistant is a function of the fiber and how it is tufted into carpet, so this varies by construction. The yarn itself performs extremely well and there are many different Smartstrand products that perform very well. It is also superior to all other fiber types when it comes to stain resistance.

We had the Smartstrand Silk from HD installed throughout the whole house in August and I can highly recommend it. Just this morning my dog vomited and it came clean with just water. Just make sure your vacuum will work on it :-)

We, too, had to "move". That's what it felt like anyway. We had the carpet installed in two parts, one week apart. Since we had closet systems, they all had to be dismantled and cleared out, the old carpet & pad removed and rooms painted (all by us) before the carpet was layed so it was a really rough couple of weeks. We just moved everything from one side of the house to the other and then back again, putting a lot of things in the basement (We still don't have everything back where it's supposed to be). We had considered renting a pod but decided that was just as much work and a lot more money.

It was really, really hard although it gave us a chance to clean out all the junk we didn't even know we had! I told my DH we'll either move or be dead before I'd do that again :-)
