There's a pattern being used by knitters to send to the troops that are stationed in very cold areas.

I've made one to send to a friend's son, and one for my husband when he goes fishing.

The only thing, I made the ribbing around the neck 6" long instead of 5". Takes one hank of Cascade 220 for one hat.

There's been another correction: the last row of ribbing around the face, dec 8 stitches-4 stitches on each side of face.

I don't have a site that shows this correction, maybe if you did a search for 'helmet liners'. If you dec only 4 stitches, the opening is a little loose and doesn't look as good.

Sorry, forgot to mention, but if you use the Cascade, it is pure wool, and it would be good to include washing instructions:

Hand wash, cold water only, let air dry.

I think enough of these are being distributed so that the soldiers already know this, but it couldn't hurt to send a reminder.

We always called these balaclava's.
