Knit or crochet? Look at the yarn company websites for free patterns. Why would a 6 month old need a scarf? Do you mean an afghan?

It is to knit. When my children were 6 months old, I put a scraf and hat on them in the winter??

I would start with this page of patterns for hats - hard to believe you wouldn't find at least one here that you like. I would then use that pattern for a scarf. Since there is so much in/out of the car these days, I doubt that many young Moms use scarves as we did since we did much more walking.
