Vicki, you could use the afghan stitch for a potholder, but it is a very flat stitch and wouldn't really give you much protection from the heat. I would suggest making it two thicknesses and crochet them together at the edges and you could use it as a hotpad. If you were to use worsted weight cotton, I think it would make a great dishcloth.

I have lots of afghan stitch pot holders....but Donna is right....double is better....but then double is always better with crocheted pot holders.

I remember when I was a little girl I helped my grandmother make an aghan for one of her friends using this stitch. We made stripes in different colors and sewed them together.
I think you could also use this stitch for a jacket.

Hello, Vicki! I'm new to this site so hope you check it from time to time. The way I have seen the afghan stitch used is as a background for counted cross stitch. I did an afghan with it that has a lion done on top in counted cross stitch. The pattern is in "leisure Arts Presents Vanna's Afghans A to Z" page 60. American School of Needlework "Victorian Afghans" has Victorian Violets pattern. Bernat Handicrafter "Afghan Heirlooms to knit and crochet" has a Victorian Rose pattern.
