What about fringe?

OK, I showed my ignorance yesterday about felting -- I guess I can do it again today. Tell me about fringe. When I make an afghan that has fringe, it usually just says to "make fringe," and tells me how to actually DO IT, but not HOW MANY STRANDS OF YARN to use. Nor HOW LONG the strands should be.

So I have been guessing. Is there a rule of thumb? Mine have seemed sparse. The last time I used 5 strands which, after you double them over and tie them, end up being 10 strands per fringe tassel. And about 5 1/2 inches long. What do you do?
