You might be unravelling from the wrong end.

Gee, and the Knitty Gritty Show I saw today was on just this. You separate the sweater pieces first--remove the sleeves, front from back, collar. She suggested you tie the unraveled yarn in a hank, and gently squeeze it in sudsy water to wash and rinse well. Let it air dry on a hangar.
