You are basically adding a little more of the pattern to the ends of your knitting. So, having cast on the 3 stitches, Your pattern will be -

Row 1: Knit 1, sl 1, K1, (then) P3, K1, sl 1, K1, *; rep from * to *.
Row 2: K4, *P1, K4, K1,*; rep from * to *, to last 3 stitches, K3 (which should end you on a K4).

For the initial cast on 3 stitches, I would knit all 3 stitches, rather that knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, then follow pattern for subsequent rows. Remember that this bit is going to be in the underarm seam.

As you knit, just check that your ribbing stays in a straight line - if it doesn't, I've given you a bum steer.

It didn't make sense to me too to do a Yarn over before turning, so I turned first and then did the yarn over. The pattern is from an actual flyer. Instructions are very poorly written as follows:
Cast on 58 sts on needles n3, knit in stocking stitch, make 6 rows, then knit 24 sts, "1 slip st, 8 sts, 1 yarn over, turn, 1 slip st, 8 sts, 2 purl together, turn, start again at " 7 times, in total = 44 sts. Cast off the 10 sts of the middle and join the 2 sides by knitting the 17 st of the left side, and then the 17 sts of the right side. Continue by making 1 yarn over after the first 2 sts and by knitting 2 sts together before the last 2 sts, 3 times every 2 rows, to obtain 28 sts.

I'm not sure what you are knitting, Mudaliar, but whatever it is the "yarn over/slip stitch" thing sounds as though you have a hole (for ribbon perhaps?). I don't really think it would make much difference whether you "yarned over" before or after turning.

The "continue by making 1 yarn over after the first 2 sts" will produce holes (perhaps I should refer to it as eyelets) on one side of the knitting.

Should these holes/eyelets be there?

Thank you so much for your response - I can't wait to go home and try it AGAIN. The bootee looks like a little shoe with a strap that buttons at the ankle. The pattern is hard for me to describe - there are definitely 2 or 3 'eyelets' on the top sides.
