I have not seen the directions, but I would think they want you to just do the required stitch around and around. In other words, do not do one row, and then turn and go in the other direction. Just go round and around like a spiral.

If you are using the Lion Brand Pattern, then just crochet 264 (44 stitches x 6 rows) SC around. It comes out looking like a mock turtleneck. The long points of the poncho are the front and back, so I started the row at one of the sides, this way the joining would not be center front or back.

I made the poncho for my 98 year old Mother who is in the hosp and always cold .
I took it to her today and she seems to love it.
She has a little pink shawl that she bought years aga and they lost it at the hosp......But after 3 days of searching ther finally found it.
You could never get her to thorw it away reminds me of a bagy with its favorite blankie...
