Not at all. This is not the traditional rib. It goes by several names, one of them being "mistake rib". It's a very nice rib. Knit a few rows and then judge for yourself. You can do this with any multiple of 4 stitches, plus 1.

Thank you so much!! I am glad to know that I was reading the pattern correctly; I just didn't know about that particular stitch. I actually spent the entire evening winding a skein of yarn into two balls so I can double my yarn for this hat (what a tangled mess that became!), so I think I will start the hat in the morning.
